Re-spray time approaching - what colour?

Re-spray time approaching - what colour?

Postby XJ81____ on Fri Jul 30, 2010 5:12 am

The bodywork on my XJ12 will be completed soon and I think I'll have the chaps rip out the dash and fix all the blower / a/c etc and stealthily fit an Ipod jack. This gives me a little more time to consider the options for paint. As some of you already know, it is currently Kingfisher. I fancy a change though. Here is my current shortlist:

BRG - is this flat or metallic?
Mineral Green - always looks nice in photos, but have never seen it in the flesh
Aston Martin Pentland Green - my current favourite.

So you see I am heading for the green option. There are some lovely RR and Bentley hues but I guess they will be unfeasibly expensive.

This is the first respray I have ever had, and I want the car to have at least as nice a lustre and finish as it did originally. The chap supervising this is a Jag specialist, so I trust that he won't allow oversprayed glass and rubber, and will not tolerate orange peel etc. Any advice on trapdoors and pitfalls I may come across? I am thousands and thousands of miles away from Norfolk so can't physically take control of this. The next time I see the car, it will be probably be the finished article.

Colour choice is too individual to make a recommendation but for Gods sake don't paint it BRG , it looks great on old English sports cars , even on xj40 sports with tan leather , but have you seen how dowdy they can look at the slightest hint of dirt ?

It's a flat colour , the same as my Westminster blue Daimler and a pita to keep clean , very rewarding to polish as you can get a real depth of gloss on these solid colours , but it is constant maintenance .

Another big deciding factor is what colour your interior is

Take a look at this colour chart , may give you some inspiration

No offence mate but you know i'm right , the dark solid colours like your green and my Westminster are hard work , i think i'd have a coronary if i used it to go commuting in , on the plus side they're easier to touch up the paint and blend in .

If a man's going to spend a small fortune on his car he needs to consider these things , anyway are you coming to Beaulieu ? , it's just down the road from you ;)

I haven't any specific suggestions but a metallic dark green is always a nice colour on a Jag. Kingfisher is a really nice colour I think (mine's in that too) but I can appreciate that as your getting a respray you might as well change it for something else to freshen things up a bit.

If your not going for a Jag colour then that AM Pentland Green looks good.

Polishing my BRG is the only bloomin' exercise I get these days ;)

I'd love to come to Beaulieu but I'm touring round Bulgaria with the London Bulgarian Choir (my girlfriend is doing the singing, I'm just hanging out!). My Sovver's last home was Lymington so I know she'd have loved the day out (mind you those cattle grids in the New Forest don't half play havoc with your bushes).

Back on topic, I can confirm how easy it is to blend in touch-ups on BRG. I took me ages to spot that the previous owner had scuffed up the nearside around bumper height for almost the full length of the car - the third picture in my signature shows how he had also ripped off the side quarter of the rear bumper as you can just about see it hanging on by only a cable tie (I've fully fixed and renovated the bumper since that pic).

So even though the paint repair looks like a classic rattle-can job it really doesn't notice.

Regards,
Ivor

again, there are no right or wrong colours. just your own taste, and how handy you are with the soapy sponge & and waxy elbow.
i think by now everyone knows what colour i like!

but i think if you can keep a car garage or covered, then the cleaning will be reduced, and the maintenance level of your colour choice wont be as bigger issue. well helps against bird poo, leaves dust etc anyhow.

Pentland Green is a good looking colour, and RR/Bentley have some lovely greens. I would respray in in Kingfisher though. It is one of my favorites on the XJ40 and looks superb when it is fresh. I love the way the colour is affected by light and you loose that as the paint dulls. Sad to say, I am with Derek on BRG; lovely on an MGA, but...
And you have to clean it all the time. Still, taste is very personal and BRG does seem to be sought after on these cars.
