...what the range of colours was at launch? I only ever seem to see very early XJ40s in red or white. Inside the plastic unit is a Walbro pump, still easily available.

Another known weak link in the A/C chain of late model years is the so-called trinary switch, replacing that solved the A/C issues on my early '94 Sovereign and late '93 Insignia...

I'd suggest to check for leaks for first, though, before you start replacing parts that might still be OK!

... a fair amount of work... Just over 70 hrs for the gearbox and exhaust transplants and all related mods/updates: Lambda sensor plumbing, starter motor, ... Note that this was done on a low-mileage car where fasteners could actually be undone with spanners instead of lump hammers/blow torches/etc...
