Re: Rear windscreen - seal and rust issues

Fill the grommet holes with clear silicone and then screw the plastic panel back on using stainless steel screws. The silicone will dry around the screw thread and seal the hole so that water will find it difficult to enter. The screws can easily be removed again - and this is what I do every time ...

Re: Rear windscreen - seal and rust issues

This is what you want to try and avoid! Wow Naki that's a LOT of rust ... Curious to hear if you managed to sort it out, as I'm sure you did. Luckily mine is not as bad as that, but there are clearly some signs of rust and I'm dreading what I'll find once the windscreen's off ... Thanks for the inf...

Re: Rear windscreen - seal and rust issues

Time to lift up that boot seal now then ;) Also check the seam join under the upright carpet at the back. I can show you some horrors of how that can turn out. It’s worth blocking off the grommet holes on that flat surface (with some silicone sealer), to stop water entering there. Hi Naki, A few we...

Re: Rear windscreen - seal and rust issues

Lifted that thin plastic cover on the outer sill of the boot. After four days garaged it was still wet under there since the last rainy drive. And pretty grimey. But surprisingly no rust there on the flat surface... After a bit of a wipe down the paint is as good as new! Probably won't refit that bl...

Re: Rear windscreen - seal and rust issues

Good to know BB, I need to research a bit. Thanks for sharing that. Luckily the mechanic that usually works on my MGA has two XJ40 parts cars that might come in handy. They told me they don't really want to take on this job though haha but I'll try to convince them. Hope no major surprises are hidin...

Re: Rear windscreen - seal and rust issues

'inner seal ' ? there is no inner seal , its a one piece extrusion , if this has come out as the picture, its either been added, or has split away from the seal , in which case you will need new.... BB Hi BB that's a surprise. This one has an inner and an outer seal lining the chrome frame. The inn...

Re: Rear windscreen - seal and rust issues

Also came across some rust on the rear outer sill of the boot: https://xj40.rvdz.me/images/61093/61093___5c379658c0e26.jpg https://xj40.rvdz.me/images/61093/61093___5c3796811ee7a.jpg And then I noticed that this thin plastic cover traps water underneath it! The car's been garaged now for three days ...

Re: Rear windscreen - seal and rust issues

Just a quick comment , if you do take the rubber seal off , you cannot refit it without taking the windscreen out , I tried for hours to refit my seal but to no avail , regards Paul . That is very good to know actually, so I might wait until I know that an appointment is scheduled with a body shop....
