Re: Spotted today

Spotted in the BBC 1 program ''Luther'' at 9.0pm tonight , a red 3.2 ? reg J118 NWK , it'll need the boot lid repairing or replacing as it got shot through :o Derek.. Not the correct registration number, or at least it is not on the DVLA MOT or road tax database. Perhaps just for filming? Mellow

Re: XJ40 4.0l crank but won't start

It could be a dry joint in the aux ingnition relay module (DBC 1009) under the dashboard. This caused my 40 to lose its spark and not start. The nature of a dry joint can result in it failing when more current passes through it so you can not test for it without powering everything up and running th...

Re: Cast Iron Manifold Welding

We used to weld manifolds and on one occasion even a cast engine block that had frost damage! As mentioned in the video the key is to clean it up very well, heat it up as hot as you can before welding and use the correct rods . Our success rate was at least 90% but we would always tell the customers...

Re: MoT test argument

The Dunlop logo is not a direction indicator. If there was a direction of rotation it would be clearly stated on the outside tyre wall. My recommendations are: Get a local tyre shop to write a letter to say that these tyres are not directional. Take this to the MOT test station, be nice to them and ...

Re: Rear shock assembly question.

What is it with rear shocks and XJ40's? When I go my one it had the wrong (early) rear shocks that have a larger bolt hole at the lower end. They had just tried to over tighten the lower bolt to stoop it slopping about in the over size hole! Loooking at the shocks it must have been done several year...

Re: Side Light Woes

I did not think there was a side light bulb in the fishtank headlights? I thought that the only side light was in the bumper? But i could be wrong? To test this take the key out the ingnition then turn the side lights on. Is there any light in either fishtanks? If not then there is no side light in ...

Re: V12 rear suspension question

If your car is newer than vin 696460 then I guess the standard damper may do the job: MNA3540AA £135.23+ from Jaguar??
But I know very little about the V12's. So I could be wrong??

Re: Oil pressure.

As mentioned above it will be the oil pressure sender unit on the engine that is at fault. I have never known an AJ6 that has low oil pressure, but there is always a first for everything. It was a known problem on the 40's. So much so Jaguar stopped selling the replacement sender units and issued a ...

Re: Car handling & tyres

The vibration during braking: This is down to warped brake disks. If you can feel it on the steering wheel it will probably be the fronts, the rears do very little unless you brake hard. You can only tell what disk is warped in a rolling road brake tester, and I would recommend changing both anyway....

Re: 4.0S for sale!

Just to add to this I think you will find that there are now less than 30 of about 370 built 4.0S auto XJ40's left in the UK! (Only 2 manual 4.0S cars!!)
