How do I change the alternator belt?

Postby ancaf33 » Wed Oct 16, 2019 10:00 am

Hello, my alternor belt makes noise, and it seems to be loose so I ordered an replacement. How do I go about changing it? I have changed belts before on other cars but never on my jaguar :)

Thank you in advance,

You need to loosen the tensioner bolts, so you can move the alternator on its bracket, same threaded rod and bolts are used to tighten the belt after replacement.
NB: do not overtighten, water pump and alternator bearings don't like that at all! ;)

Tensioner bolts & rod seen from the top here:

Like all fasteners on XJ40s, these have a tendency to get stuck solid: apply some penetrating fluid/WD40 before you want to undo it!

What Katar just said... ;)

Indispensable, especially for engine bay work!

Before removing the belt, you should check if there is any bearing noise from the alternator or water pump.
What you don’t want to do, is change the belt, then find there’s a worn bearing in either.

To check- (with the engine running) place a long screw driver on a safe place away from the moving belt, on the alt or water pump, place your ear to the other end and listen.

Thank you for all the replies :) I will check to see if there is any sound from the water pump or alternator. Just curious how would it sound if there was a bearing issue?

Since you only said there was “noise”, we don’t know if that is only a slipping belt- screeching, or bearing noise- rumbling. I don’t know how well those words translate to Swedish? But that’s something to go on.

it is indeed screeching which stops after a while. Since I am an English minor I think I will be all right :) edit: when I change the alternator belt should I also change any other belt at the same time? I suspect that belts haven't been changed since early 2000s

Ok. If the noise is only a screech, that should just be a worn/ badly adjusted belt.
There’s only 2 belts. The air Con is the other.

all right, I can wait with changing the air con belt until summer :) but I will try to change the alternator belt after I move next month.
