I agree yes. But that’s how the car came to me. But more importantly, there’s no point in having the wheels balanced separately again, as really it could do with the tyres changing, and if the tyres are coming off, then the wheels should be refurbished at the same time! So it brings up more questions than answers!

Mixed news today for this car.
Flew straight through the MOT, with no advisories. But with only 400 miles since the last, so it should.

The not so good news?
The stereo decided to play up, or not play at all really. A new one on me. When I first turned it on, it said “CLEAN” on the screen. For a few seconds. Or it May have been CLEAN 1? Soon after it appeared like the tape was playing, as it says Side 1. But the tape doesn’t play, and there’s no sound. None of the buttons function anymore, except the on/ off.
So I guess it’s lunched? Or one of the many resistors/ capacitors has decided to retire itself.

I tried unplugging the CD changer. I tried poking at the tape? Besides that I was out of ideas, short of taking the thing apart.
I was hoping to keep this stereo, as it’s the original to the car.

Swap the tape drive? You should have few spare ones? :)

Is it definitely the tape drive at fault? Or the function control somehow?

Both super easy to swap, tape drive comes out first, I'd swap it if you still have spares.
The CLEAN that you saw on screen possibly points to tape drive issue, maybe its blocking something within radio.

Handbook reads "After approximately 15 hours playing time, the display will indicate the word "CLEAN". You should then clean the tape mechanism itself using a mechanical type of cleaner with a wetting agent. An approved cleaning kit is available from the Jaguar accessory range. DO NOT use abrasive type cleanres because they can cause excessive wear on the playback head"
Worth a try ?? ;)

IIRC mine did this when I first got the car.

PO said it had recently said clean and given up responding to anything, so he had just turned it off. Tape wouldn’t play and the tape wouldn’t eject either! Same issue as yours?

I ‘fixed’ mine by repeatedly pressing eject and gently levering the tape upwards to help it eject.

Believe it or not I put the tape straight back in and it played.

Never played another tape since, as I don’t have any anymore! I use a tape to 3.5mm jack converter for the I-pod the last few years.
Regards, Carl
