A new XJ81 owner.

Postby brebner89 » Mon Dec 18, 2017 8:20 pm

Good afternoon.
I am now the owner of a XJ81.
It is a 94 M reg with 80k miles. Sky Blue with Grey leather. Looks superb.

Had been sitting in a drive way for a few years. Saw it now and again when i went to visit my Grandad. Finally built up the courage to knock on the door and ask the nice gentleman what his plans were.
Long story short he had ill health and couldn't do things to the car so sat for 3 years.
He named his price and i agreed. (much cheapness).

Anyhoo it needs work as to be expected. Rust patches on each sill at the front.
Both bottoms of front wings are rusty. Rest of the body is solid.

When it gets hot it smokes from drivers side tailpipe. (blue smoke) Worst case is piston rings, or valve stem seals??

Everything else is great. Starts easily and feels smooth on the road.
Obviously needs a full service. Oils on everything and filters.

What else is a must to look for on these to help prevent problems in future?
I will upload pictures when i can.
Thank you for any pointers you have. much appreciated.

Congratulations on your purchase.

Sounds like the usual bodywork issues. Have you checked the bulkhead?
Also check for water/ damp under the front footwell carpets. Remove them to dry out, and check the sill to floor joins for more corrosion.

Here is a must do.

Also do a compression test on that smoking bank.
It could have a failed HG. It will still feel relatively smooth even as a V10 or V8!

I have spares here if you need anything.

If you want to know your paint and trim codes, look on the VIN sticker inside the NSF door aperture.
I suspect you will have JFN Diamond Blue.
LDY Savill Grey interior.

Thank you for the replies.

Where on the bulkhead do they corrode?
Okay i will lift the carpet to check. for damp. Will need lifted to patch floor but will have a better look.

Will do a compression check also encase it is that. Expensive fix but would be worth it.

Getting to know the trim would be good. Been told the JDHT (Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust) is best place to go to find out everything about my car.

I will be looking for parts in the near future. Just not sure what is needed yet. Will make a shopping list and let you know.

Do some reading on here. Here’s one thread for example.

It’s the horizontal seam that runs all along the back of the engine bay. Invariably though, it’s the hardest to examine areas that go the worst.
Under the wiper motor housing, and under the wings in the corners. All these typically allow water to leak into the footwells, with far reaching results.

Finding part numbers with exploded views is an invaluable resource. See here.

Be very careful when ordering parts to make sure they are compatible with your model. Don’t assume all parts will fit all model year XJ40. Invariably many do not!
Ideally always check the VIN range compatibility.
That’s the best advice I can give you.

XJ81 was only produced between 93-94.

ANS: OK, it seems that both.
