Hi Carl,
This makes me think again about the S-Type as a daily/ second car. How do you get to look at the cills if they have factory fitted plastic covers over them?

Regards
Aidan

Snap! Don - I have added an exact same model to the miniatures collection. I will now have to find a rattier version to justify repainting it the correct colour (seafrost).

Bit of an update on my S:

After a week or so of using the car every day (and very enjoyable that is too!!!), I started to hear a squeaking and groaning coming from the rear n/s suspension. After another week, the racket became so bad that I thought it was time to get it fixed! Suffice to say, the car is now in dry-dock in Droitwich having the rear suspension bushes replaced and the gearbox oil and filter changed.

Had a call from the garage this morning to tell me that, whilst they were under the car on the ramp, they noticed that the main under-tray was missing. Further, the front brake pipes were on their last legs through corrosion and, the killer, I had a broken front n/s coil spring!

All in all, this is now going to set me back close on £1500 as I wanted them to use genuine Jaguar parts and not pattern - I just dont trust things like the bushes etc. to patterns.

Oh well, the joys of running a Jaguar eh? Dont want to take any shortcuts!

Business as usual then for running any older Jag? There can’t be many out there not needing work.
It soon adds up though when you have to pay labour rates.
Let’s hope you get some good use out of it now.

Agreed Naki - and as this will be my daily, it needs to be reliable and in good order.
Most things I could probably have fixed myself as I have the skills, but I dont have the space or facility so that is why I used an independent to sort it.

Definitely yes. A daily needs to be the main priority to keep it reliable.
You can’t help wondering if the PO knew about the faults, when selling?
So many adverts will say, “Genuine reason for selling”? (Needs lots of work is also the genuine reason!).
New car forces sale? (New Car was only bought because of the faults on the old car!).... I could go on...but I won’t.

A little update on the S.....

As the Daimler is in hibernation, we took the S to the South of France over the Christmas and New Year break. What a car for a long distance jaunt! Calais to Carmaux (just north of Toulouse) - best part of 1000km - took just about 10 hours of driving time. Same for the return journey. Economical too - even sitting at 130kph on the Autoroute with the cruise control active. Same figures for the return journey and it was great to arrive at the end of the journey feeling just as refreshed as at the start - which cannot be said for my BMW 4 series coupe!!!!

The shots below tell the story of the return journey - cant believe we got that sort of economy with a 3 litre V6 sitting at 80mph.

That’s very good going. And importantly, no breakdowns.

Hi Carl,
interesting read, i have looked at these on and off for a while with the intention of buying one to knock around in for my daily commute and other duties. The rust issues associated with this model are well documented and i am fully aware of this for the budget (i'm a cheap skate) that i want to spend and the electrical gremlins along with the gearbox issues.

I am good at wielding the spanners and have contemplated a sound in body but maybe with maybe some gearbox issues to get a cheap car to fill my requirements for a project and now reading your comments earlier in this this thread has fueled my desire having learnt that all gearbox issues MAY not be directly attributed to the unit itself. i must admit that i have not done much research but i will now. :D

Good luck with your purchase and hope that its all sorted now.

Regards
Gary.
