Not necessarily...
The thermostat stays closed for the first couple of KMs when the engine warms up, the damage might be less than you fear.

Fingers crossed!!!

Once you've met my wife, you know my luck doesn't depend on cars!

But I haven't fixed it yet. I was tired of working on the street all the time, so I rented a very cheap place to work on the cars. Well equiped though. 2 car lifts, welding (TIG and MIG) plasma cutter, hydraulic jacks, car movers.... all a car lover will ever need! I am gonna fix the car there. It's 15 minutes from my house (on my motorcycle), which is so much closer than my inlaws where I did the motorswap (1,5 hours from door to door)

Some pics for your entertainment:

And a car I quite like as well. Citroen DS

The rad I had from Pim was the wrong size. I now have a NOS rad, in the right size. It is completely new. will show you later on. But as I now have such a great working place, I will also pick up some other issues like rust, a not working handbrake etc. So updates are on the way!

Funky sensor bracket. this belt is gonna be replaced. Very worn!

A bit of the damage done by the chap who used my car for the wedding:

Somehow I thought I would be a good idea to remove the wings. starting with the right one. Minimal surface rust luckily. gonna give it all a good clean up, some welding maybe and fresh paint:

Inner wings don't look too bad at all!

The damage to that rad cradle and its surroundings is impressive, and not in a good way... :(

Fix this, above all. The bubbling here when it goes through will let water into the scuttle and into the bulkhead which is double skinned. Once it gets in there its a hellish job to repair and the reason I let my S1 (Ropey) go.

The stuff above the radiator mount is normal to the S1, its partly caused by metal fatigue. Later S2/3 cars had a stiffener welded to the outside of the chassis leg to stop it flexing as much, as a result they don't suffer as much.

Rich

Hi Will,

out of curiosity, why are sticking an xj40 engine into a S1 that looks like its best days are over? I imagine its a hell of a lot of work to do the swap, but not adding much value onto the car. I am well jealous of your workshop by the way, thats what I want as well!

The challenge was one reason to do it. But my S1 is not very bad. Lot of ugly rust parts on door and wings but nothing structural. If it would have been perfect, it would have been a shame to put in a modern engine. Than stock would be best. mine is not original but solid. Perfect car for a motorswap. If it hadn't been wrecked, I would have driven it daily as I did about a month ago with no problem at all!
