Have you got winter tyres on your daily driver?

On my Focus? No, its a disaster of a car in the snow. I got caught last winter and it just didn't cooperate at all, it was so bad, that why I went out and bought myself an X-Type AWD, I don't think snow tyres would make that much of a difference. Our council have a knack for not preparing for the snow which they know is on the way, so when it hits, its the kind of road surface which Torville & Dean could do the Bollero on! :x

err, they make a hell of as difference! Have you ever tried them?
i would choose a 2WD with snow tyres, over a 4WD on summer tyres anyway, if i want to get up a snowy road. and also stop on a snowy road! 4wd won't help you stop any better. ;)

I had this discussion with a couple of garages, thinking they would big the tyres up to me to get sale, but it was the other way around. They said they were not worth it, hence why I bought the X-Type. I will go for the ultimate combo, will put some snow tyres on the X-Type, see what happens. Either way, I will never ever trust the Focus in the snow ever again.

Snow tires definitely make a big difference to traction on snow. In some European countries like Austria and Switzerland, where they get snow every year, snow tires are mandatory in winter. I've had all-season tires and they were fantastic on snow and absolutely fine for me in summer. Watch out for the X-type: according to the internet, the salt eats these as well. It's like rust is part of the Jag "experience".

Absolutely, I have just replaced all of the sills as they were rotten, I paid very little for the car, and they have been done and all waxoiled. Rob J runs an AWD estate for the winter, and has done for a while, he says they are great. Either way, can't be as bad as the Focus. ;)

Here's some evidence for you.
I certainly would not have been driving on this ice road on normal tyres.

My 2p's worth, but if everyone had winter tyres on, there would be no reason to spend millions of pounds flinging salt all over the roads every year.

That's how the Scottish roads can be. That's what they were like last year when I was nearly stranded in the Focus

I will be making the purchase. I wonder if my boss would let me put them on my company car too, since that's what I spend most of my time in?
