A very astute comment Naki. Just keeping these cars running is hard work (MOT wise in particular). Basically we all love our 40’s, but if we were ‘rich’ I’m sure we would all be driving something far more exotic. This is why I love this site, everyone encourages you when you hit a problem. If I had the money, there are loads of things I would rectify, but the reality of life is we keep them on the road and make improvements as and when we can and when you do, it’s feels great. None of us should feel embarrassed about minor cosmetic faults, these cars are up to 30 years old and as we all know were not perfect when new

...but what? If old cars were to be legislated off the roads next week. I haven't a clue what to get, money or no - I despair.
The XJ40s are OK cars really. Modern stuff is just too - let's say, poncy (I was going to use a less PC word - but stopped myself).

Why do we refuse to accept faults?

Oh no, no one was out of order or anything, the issue was more with me. The wing was grating on me and the fact people noticed it made it worse, but no one said or did anything unnecessary. The Majestic is my favourite child (dont tell the 4.0S) and I’m very strict about it, I’ll be making sure that car outlives me and will only be getting sold as part of my will so I like it to be as good as it can be, but as you and I have discussed, and chris barney has rightfully picked up on, these things are getting old, to do lists are common, just the way it is. Where I sold the Series 3 because it became too much to handle, I wouldn’t sell the Majestic or 4.0S for the same reason, that’s why I’m sinking the S3 money in to the 40’s.

You are spot on Chris. Fixing their little issues and dramas is part of the ownership process and wouldn’t have them any other way. As for the money side, would probably still have them and maybe some V12’s just to add to the madness!
