S-Type 3.0 V6

Postby carlmt » Mon Oct 08, 2018 6:17 pm

Errrr....... Going to take a gander at this in a couple of weeks :

Image

Always wanted one ever since they first launched - and now is as good a time as any as I am heartily bored with the company BMW, so handing it back and taking the "cash for car" option...

Interior isnt too shabby either and I prefer the "original" design thoughts for the model as opposed to the later variants :

Roman Bronze is the colour....

Looking forward!!!!!

Nice 'un, Carl!
Its paint colour combines really well with that of the interior.

Pay good attention to driveline U joints, CV joints and wheel bearings, those are the S-Type's typical weak spots...

I've heard they are made from the same material that was used for XJ40 top radiator bushes
1997, 4.0 LWB X300 - Unlucky car but still a daily driver.
1988, 3.6S XJS - Never ending restoration project.
1994, 3.2S X300 - Accident damaged, October 2015. Gone!
1994, 3.2S XJ40 - Long gone.

Good grief!!!

No chance Don........ Absolutely no. I saw this in the latest JEC rag and thought that they had the tea boy in as Editor for the month.

Hideous!!!

Anyroad!! - Been doing a lot of reading on the S-Type for quite a while as my BMW Gran Coupe is probably one of the most uncomfortable cars I have ever driven long distance. Most of the gearbox issues that occur with these cars actually originates from the ABS system on the rear drive shafts. The hubs that hold the reluctor rings corrode and the rings go out of shape - thereby changing the air gap between ring and sensor. The gearbox is commanded by signals from the ABS reluctors - these go out of whack and the gearbox reverts to limp home mode. An easy repair with new rings and a reset on the ECU. The other 'recommended to do' with these gearboxes is to replace the fluid and filter on first collection and then after another 70000 miles. They are supposed to be maintenance free, but received wisdom has it that a fluid refresh and new filter works wonders.

As for the cills - yep, just like the X-Type, they are hidden beneath plastic trim covers. Have been sent photos of the one I am looking at and all seems well here.

Later S-Types have all sorts of maladies throw up electrically and most of these relate to the state of charge of the battery. They have electronic parking brakes and such and it is not unknown that the car can lock you in or lock you out at will or not release the parking brake. The one I am looking at is an early car (2000) so has a manual handbrake and quite a few less electrical gizmos.

I dare say there will be 'fun' times at times - but isnt that all part of the charm of Jaguar ownership?

I'm considering one of these as a winter daily.... any advice on what to look at when buying one? I went to test drive one today, quite liked how it goes. Feels more punchy and nimble than I expected actually.

Well, the Roman Bronze didnt work out. Tried to contact the vendor numerous times this week and last to make arrangements to go down there and was getting no response until, on Tuesday, he told me that there was a "gearbox problem". His local garage (not a Jag specialist) couldnt figure it out and I could see a long, drawn out process shaping up so I asked for my deposit back until he had sorted the car out. And since then.........nothing! No response to emails or messages. He now owes me £250! Small Claims court - here I come!

His name is Richard John Fryer and he lives in or near Carmarthen in West Wales - be aware of him if you ever come across a car he is selling!

Anyroad - as I knew I wasnt getting anywhere with this shyster, I cast my net out again and came across this beauty:

Image

A younger car (2002) with less miles (67k) and in a great colour - Seafrost..... Reminds me a lot of Pim's Peppermint! Bodywork spotless, no warning lights or messages and sills in good order beneath the plastic covers. Imperceptible gear changes and interior is mint.

So went and took a look today and...........bought it!!!!

Lovely car - quiet, smooth.....a little harder ride than the Daimler but not as harsh as the BMW and, most importantly, I do not have to crawl out of it after a fairly long journey!

Now to go through it with a fine-toothed comb............

Pip pip!!
