Water pump identification / replacement

Postby Indiana_Jones » Tue Jan 09, 2018 10:07 am

Hey there chaps, as per my car thread, the water pump is currently leaking coolant out of the weep hole, so will need to replace (or renew) it.

I've taken a look online at various places, such as Rockauto: http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/jagu ... +pump,2208

Which shows me a GMB pump looking like this:

But, going by the pictures, it seems that these water pumps don't look like mine, which appears to have a thinner belt (and pulley):

Which matches the alternator:

Both together:

Also, it seems that there is different types of water pumps depending on the type of alternator, I'm thinking that this might be the difference between the thickness of the belt pulley (perhaps the photos of the pump are fairly stock?)

Any ideas of what type of alternator I have on my car and any ideas on what pump I need to get?

Naki gave me a link to one in my thread, which doesn't show a picture, but I assume it's the correct type, a little more expensive than some others, but if that's the one I need, it's the one I need.

Appreciated,

Indy

You will find the very early models (86-87) have a number of differences, to anything after that.
The water pump pulley being one of those.

I have a used one available, though of course new will always be best.

Cheers mate, I might have to grab that pump off you, as i took a quick look and they seem bloody hard to get hold of or they want moon beams for them (plus i need to ship to NZ)

Are there refurb kits available still? I imagine they'd be suitable for all the pumps? Might be a slightly cheaper option if i can find someone here to do it.

Cheers

Edit: I see there are a couple of companies that do exchanged units:

I'll investigate and if no joy, I'll flick you a message Naki

Was just having a thought, referring to XJRTTs thread on his rebuild: viewtopic.php?t=2461 he pulled of the existing pulley as part of the overhaul, I wonder if it'd be possible to buy a new 4/5 grove pump and then remove the pulley from that and replace it with the old one?

I assume everything else on the pump (impeller, shaft and housing) is the same?

I suspect the two units will be the same inside, but it’s hard that be sure 100%.

I think I have seen recon kits about, but not sure where? As long as you have a hydraulic press, then it’s a DIY job.

The refurbished unit is tempting I guess, but you will have to send them your old one, so it’s additional long haul postage costs for you.

Looking at the on-line parts list on jaguar heritage it looks like there was a change at engine number 109970. (Not on a vin. number!)
The pulley was available as a separate part, as were all the inner parts of the pump including the impeller, bearing and the seal.
The seal also changes with the same engine number as above.
But the shaft included with the bearing, does not change.
The last part number for the early version of the complete pump given by Jaguar is: EAC7242.

Just about at a stage where I can fit a new pump, just one question on my mind was what is the 'correct' tension I need on the pulley belt? I've seen mention of being able to twist it in 'half', but is there a difference between the 4/5 grove serpentine belts vs the 'V' belt (which is what this has).

Cheers! :D

\Will update soon, with pictures, if I get time to finish the job this weekend!
