3.2S Intermittent Hesitation & EML

Postby Welshy » Sat Mar 03, 2018 10:22 am

I'm hoping someone will be able to shine a light on a fault which has recently developed on my Jag

The car is used mainly on weekends, with occasional use during the week driving to work. Over the last few weeks, the car has occasionally been holding back when accelerating. Last Sunday, the car hesitated as I accelerated out of a 30mph to 60mph zone and the fault code (EML) came on. Once the hesitation stopped, the car carried on driving fine, albeit with the EML on. When I switched the engine off and on, the light cleared

I used the car a few days this week for commuting. Once, whilst accelerating hard out of a junction, the car hesitated (like it was over fuelling) and the rev counter was stuck at 3000 for approx. 2 seconds. Again, the EML came on and the car accelerated hard. Switching the engine off and on cleared the light

I know there's a fault with the engine idle speed when warm (currently 1200rpm) which needs sorting. The car drives well apart from this, especially as I've overhauled the suspension.
The car has 87000 miles, with a very comprehensive service history

My thoughts are the throttle body is at fault, but any other suggestions are welcomed

start with the basics

fuel , spark , air ,

ensure all have new or relatively new filters ( especially fuel filter ) in good condition , and the spark plugs are ok and the dizzy cap and rotor is in good condition as well as HT leads ,

then clean the TB , check for air leaks around the induction system ,

then get round to adjusting the idle , as this is a known issue , and also the throttle cable can stretch not allowing wide open throttle when called for,

then you onto other issues

What does the VCM tell you? That would be a good place to start first IMO.

I have something similar. It has been like this since forever, and I have changed everything except from fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel lines and the engine...
In my case it feels like starvation at around 3500-4000 rpm. Top speed is not limited by this issue. I suppose it can be either too weak spark at max torque, where cylinder pressure is at max or simply too weak fuel supply. On the other hand I guess that would get worse as rpm goes up, but in my case the car feels like it’s pulling with full power after this weak spot.

With the check engine light triggered, (on) stop the car, turn off engine then turn the ignition on but don't start. Press the VCM button then look at the mileage display. You should see a fail code, Fuel Fail and a number or FF and a number.

To get the VCM code:

Run the car until the fault happens.
Turn it off then wait 5 seconds.
Turn the ignition on ,but do not start the engine, then press the VMC button.

It will reset the VCM faults every time you start the engine so there is no point checking if the fault has not happened!
