Found this Noise from rear. - Diff

Postby swallow_che » Sun Oct 28, 2018 3:32 am

Hi all

I have a question for Noise From Rear Between 25-40 mi/h

It sounds like propeller spinning sound. the spinning noise goes faster and slower as the speed goes up and down.

can hear the noise especially when the car slows naturally by releasing the acceleration.

it is definitely not the hub bearings as renewed recently.

any clues?

Please help!

I can only guess you've checked for obvious things, like something rubbing the prop/driveshafts, and that you've checked the diff oil level and brake discs for warping.

A failing diff bearing (pinion) in a Manta I used to have used to make a whining noise but that would be through the total speed range.

What about greasing the driveshaft UJs?

check the handbrake pads, as the retaining spring pin comes out and the pad edge rubs against the brake shoe

can happen more when going around corners as the shoes will rock outwards causing the scraping noise

That’s not good news then. The output shaft bearings are usually the first thing to fail and make a noise.
It’s normally described as a whining noise.

You may well be looking at replacing the bearings and seals in on the diff.

Ha.. bad news...
it might be it as 200,000km on mileage
i think mine is LSD 3.58 as 1990 Daimler
Correct?

As it’s hard to get used one here in Korea.
I might need to rebuild.

Found this kit on Ebay.

Will it be all needed to rebuild?

And it’s okay to delay till noise gets real bad?
Because noise isn’t that bad now
Some people wouldn’t notice. Only sensitive person notices..

Ok that kit looks just the ticket, though I haven’t checked part numbers. Timpken is a good brand too.
LSD is correct for your car.

I guess you can leave it for a while. Worst case scenario is a bearing breaks up/ seizes. But I have not heard of it happening before. But you never know?
