Carpet Colours

Postby Simont485 » Sun Jan 03, 2016 4:25 pm

I am trying to find out all the options available for the XJ12.

I have seen other XJ40s with Red/Mulberry carpets especially on the S models and Daimler.

I don't know if it was available on the V12 though!

I don't see why they would not have been available? I have never seen red carpets on an XJ12 though.
I get the feeling most buyers chose "recommended" colour schemes/ trim combinations.
No reason no to fit them though, if that's what you want?

What colour do you have Simon?

I'm sure I've seen a V12 with a nice deep blue carpet, which was on a navy blue car. I'm sure it was a 12?

True, the neutral coloured carpets you have seem to be much tougher wearing and stand the test of time than the bold coloured ones.

My red carpet in the S is spotless because it's had an easy life but I've seen so many red carpets that have not aged as nicely.

Going through my brochure collection there is reference to carpet colours for the S models only.

All S models were fitted with Ruby or Smoke Grey carpets.

But no reference if available on other cars....but I guess when buying a New Jag and you wanted Ruby carpet it wouldn't have been a problem!

I'm pretty sure I've seen a body colour/trim combination chart somewhere. Let me dig through the archives.

Well, from what Rob said tonight, your car will have been factory ordered by the customer as that's how Jag worked at the time, only what was ordered what built, so had your cars first owner said to the bloke that day in the showroom, give me a Ruby carpet, it would have been given one. Apparently Jag dealers were told to get the finger out and upsell, upsell, upsell, MORE PROFITS, offer sunroofs, more toys, promote the bespoke Insignia range, however most of the time it turned out the sales guys just sat back and prayed for an easy life, so probably a lot of customers didn't actually know they could personalise their car more to their tastes unless they interrogated the brochures, which a lot of people don't bother even looking at. Could also be the lady or gent didn't care too much about the carpets, they just wanted the most powerful machine in red! ;)

Found it! The pdf in the following link gives all the trim carpet combinations for the 93/94 year.

Those jaguarforums.com pdf links are very useful - the information is also on the JDHT XJ40 Supplementary model information DVD (JHN1130)

The XJ12 has the same interior specification level as the Jaguar Sovereign - in spec terms it is effectively a Sports pack Sovereign 6 litre.

Jaguar would make a car with pretty much any colour combination the customer ordered - they were very flexible, which is why the individual XJ40's specification varies so much. Oddly, the VIN 'plate' does not show the presence of contrast piping - the same interior colour code is used for piped and unpiped seats. Cars with a different carpet from usual will also go unrecorded on the VIN 'plate'. Both will be recorded on the car's factory build sheet, but they are closed in the archive now. My own car has Savile grey leather seats piped Isis blue. The code for that is ZLY - which is what is recorded on its build sheet. The car itself just displays LDY - Savile grey without contrast piping.

To demonstrate just how flexible Jaguar were, the seats on both of these cars were ordered new from a dealer like this by their first owner - and trimmed like this in the Jaguar factory when the car was first built.
