Fuel filler lid

Postby bigdavy » Tue Sep 12, 2017 7:36 pm

Need some help with the fuel filler cap on a 1988 Daimler sovereign, push type cover.
The cover doesn't open when pushed, it will open using the little lever inside the boot.
Having read other threads I went looking for the inline fuse, found the holder but no fuse. I fitted a 5 amp fuse which immediately blew. I replaced with a 10amp, it didn't blow but cap still won't open.
Suggestions?
The car is totally original so I'd like to fix it if possible, if not what do I need to do to change to the later type you can lift?
Thanks.

From way over here "it" sounds like the locking solenoid has failed. Try opening the filler, then lock and un-lock the car. A small "pin" should move back and forth. You are moving it manually, with the lever inside the boot ....
Life begins at Forty !... I was born with nothing, I seem to have most of it left.

Yes standard fail on the lock solenoid.
Does anyone have a working one on any of these?
I haven't seen one ever, on a 3.6!

I guess in theory you could change the whole latch box for one off a later model, but you would also need to change the filler lid and hinge too. Of course the electrical plug is different too!

Though for originality you can try remove the solenoid, dismantle and clean up. You may be able to get it working again?

Thanks for the replies.

Guess I'll try removing it and see if I can get it going again.

Yes, the only option now I fear. Unless someone knows of a NOS by chance?

Aren't the early and late filler caps a slightly different size iirc?

I'd be interested to see if you can get it working again. Always a laugh having to dive into the boot when you go to fill up
