Wipers Won't Park

Postby KingfisherJon » Tue Aug 20, 2019 3:59 pm

My wiper parking and functionality on intermittent had been temperamental for a month or so, finally deciding to give up en-route to the XJ40 meet this month!

On single sweep, they stop as soon as you take your hand off the stalk. On intermittent, they stop all over the place.

I've replaced the passenger side inline fuse, and the microswitch, and they still don't park.

I've noticed the gear in the motor housing stops turning as soon as you take your hand off the stalk. I presume it's meant to keep turning until it presses the red microswitch button in again?

Is there anything else I should check? Short of replacing the module, I've ran out of ideas, but don't really want to waste time and money on that just out of desperation!

Had the same problem with mine a few weeks ago. If you look at my user name you will find out what I did under "Cheap wiper motor fix for wiper not parking" . Doing the link thing is beyond my skill  give it a go and see if it resolves it. Craig

In short, I cleaned the switch out with contact cleaner. There was slight movement in my switch position so I secured the whole switch closer to the wheel lump? Only by a mill or two. This worked a treat but I found the switch on eBay cheaper than from specialists. Have you operated the wipers with the cover off and confirmed that the lump rotates past the red switch? If so it is the same issue as mine and mine was resolved with just a clean as above. Good luck.

The lump on mine will rotate for eternity if you keep the wiper stalk held towards you, but then it just stops immediately when you take your hand off the stalk, regardless of where it is.

Everything in mine is an extremely snug fit. I'll give some contact cleaner a go, but I've got a feeling there's something not communicating with the microswitch properly here. Unless the microswitch I've just installed is also faulty?

I changed it this morning. I'll try reinstalling it. Failing that, I'll just try another, they're cheap enough on eBay!

Just had a fiddle with the microswitch again. No change at all. I did notice the far left pin could’ve been on better, so I unscrewed the securing screw for that wire and secured it fully onto the terminal. Still no change. I even tried connecting the other two pins the other way round.

I’m at a total loss what could be causing this now.

Try pulling the micro switch out and having someone operate the wipers inside and you manually engage the red micro switch just in case the oval isn't pushing down the switch enough? Obviously be carefull as everything is live but maybe the oval has worn just enough not to make the micro switch click. Good luck

It won’t be a problem with the red switch not being pressed down enough as the problem is, for some reason, the plastic bump stops turning straight away, instead of turning a full cycle until the microswitch clicks again.

There’s something that’s either telling the white plastic gear/bump to stop turning before it should, or power is only being applied to it when the stalk is pressed in. That’s usually what happens when the inline fuse blows.

As it’s attached to the module, I think that’ll be my next try, before investigating the wiring. The modules are surprisingly cheap on eBay!
