Trying to figure out this noise.

Postby darrenwgaransi+ » Sat Jun 09, 2018 2:08 am

Hi Everyone,

I just can't get to the bottom of this. It only happens after the car has been driven at least 5 miles; there is a very dull thump/knock/tapping sound from the rear of the car. It is hard to determine if it's coming from the passenger or driver side and it only happens when the car is going very slow, such as when coming to a stop or rolling at idle speed. It doesn't matter if the brakes are applied or not. This happened before and after the differential was replaced. Could it be a wheel bearing?

Is the noise at wheel rotation frequency ?

May be a faulty tire/bulge that shows up when it's warm after a few miles.

It does seem to happen in sympathy with the rotation of the wheels but I've had the tires moved around from front to back and the noise still comes from the back.

I can also hear the noise if I turn the wheels by hand with the car raised.

Sounds like you need to grease the UJ’s on the rear drive shafts?

I will second that! Grease the U/J's. You will need a grease gun.

Ideally this should be some as part of the year service, but I suspect most XJ40s haven’t had this done for a very long time. Not since under 10 years old/ main dealer service?

I did grease the U joints. The noise didn't go away.

Ok.
Other possibilities to check.
Lower fulcrum bearings (at the base of the hubs where there join the wishbone).
Top shock bushes. Often not done up tight enough, and either wear the surround Bush and sleeve.
Even when new shocks are fitted I have seen them not done up tight enough.

I think I'll take the rear shocks apart this weekend and see if I can figure it out. I'll keep you all posted.
