Cylinder head rocker cover

Postby Jaguarxj40 » Sun Oct 01, 2017 10:00 pm

Right, as you all know I am in the first throws of the rebirth of my 40, engine bay had been cleaned as has the replacment engine. I will soon be fitting up the ancillaries, cleaned and painted where necessary but the rocker cover is giving me some issues.

When new we're they powder coated :?: I was thinking of rubbing it down and prepping with etch primer before the final colour coat, now should it be gloss black or satin black, it's difficult to tell at the moment. I'm not into concourse and my choice is for satin finish, all comments appreciated.

Also I will need a new Jaguar badge for the rocker cover, best place or contact where to get a good quality one from :D

Most AJ6 engine's had a satin black cam cover with bare aluminium exposed at the top of the ribs. The covers were made by first spraying them black then machining the paint off the tops of the ribs and the location where the sticker goes. The later AJ6 had a satin black finish and the ribs were left un-machined so these were black also. (After all, it's cheaper to leave out the machining process)

Many people paint their cam covers then carefully sand down the paint on the ribs to expose the aluminium again. If one were to nit-pick this isn't faithful to the original finish because the swirly machined finish is not reproduced by hand sanding... It depends how far you want to take things to reproduce what the factory did.

XJRover has often got them on ebay:

I had mine powder coated in Satin Black, with one of the old stock stickers fitted:

I've got a dealer poster framed in 'the jag room' which shows a 4.0 engine bay with the rocker up close, I went with this as confirmation of the finish.

Powder coating was free, but think it would be about £20 normally. Hope this helps!

The cam cover with the oil filler in is the later design without the aluminium exposed at the top of the ribs.
