I bought a cheapish condenser to reinstate the air conditioning on my (early) car, it cost me £90 off eBay from a company called "Premier Motor Factors". The fit wasn't brilliant and I seem to recall having to modify the top panel for it to sit properly but, touch wood, the air con still works 3 years later.

Uh-Oh ....Naki is right!

The part you ordered fits the 4 litre 6 cylinder just fine ...however, it looks like the 12 *IS* different ...I just assumed the A/C would be similar between the 40 and the 81 ...wrong!!

note to self: don't assume anything when it comes to Jags :?

Never assume anything with XJ40 parts. Always check part numbers to your VIN range/ model before buying, on JCP.
There are an incredible number of changes and unique parts.

It’s probably worth having the system pressure tested first, then take it from there.

Sorry all, I have been unavoidably offline.

XJ81/40 condensers are not interchangeable. The V12 AC system has one hose either side of the radiator to allow room for the twin air boxes to be serviced.

As far as I am aware the XJ81 condenser is NLA so if the condenser is leaking you will need to repair it, get a good used unit, or try to find someone somewhere that has a new old stock unit. A good AC specialist might be able to make custom piping or hoses for you to use the 40 unit in the 81 if there is no way to find an 81 unit.

Be extremely careful running ‘standard’ unleaded in a V12. Yes they will tolerate it, but unless you are running them on the freeway all the time to burn off any carbon deposits in the cylinders, standard unleaded will detonate. It is almost impossible to detect the detonation because the V12 runs so smoothly even when detonating.

V12s also have a habit of dropping exhaust valve seats, and constant detonation combined with hot shutdowns and then cold startups in very cold climates exacerbates the issue. A dropped valve seat on a V12 is a very expensive exercise that will more than negate any saving from the cheaper fuel.

Best,

with regard to fuel ,
the V12 was designed to run on ' unleaded petrol ' of 95 to 98 RON , my 1989 V12 on marelli ignition even has a ' fuel rating plug ' in the engine bay to tell the ECU what RON rating fuel you are running in the car, with the supplied plug fitted or not fitted allows a different map for the ECU to prevent detonation issues etc , mostly for the continent and US fuel which is rated lower I think ?

so , in the UK at least, ' normal ' unleaded is fine all the time, but high rating unleaded can be used , and some benefit can be felt when doing so ,

but as with any V12, you need to drive it like you stole it to ensure it is happy , don't trundle around just above idle, let it see the red line.........

There’s an A/C specialist in Kings Lynn who made up a custom Condensor for another 81 owner I know. He still has the pattern and was advertising them up until recently.
I can put you in touch if needs be.
There’s always a way to get things fixed. The only question is time and money as always.

My car is in store at the moment, so I'll have to wait and see what I need, what I get sent, and then come up with a plan of action.

Watch this space :)

Well my el-cheapo condenser just turned up at the house.

This is what I've got

My car is in storage for another 10days or so, but what is the consensus
Is that an XJ81 condenser ?

Thanks

Don't think it is for the XJ81, it's a nice late XJ40 factory R134A unit. Worth much more than you paid!
