It is very therapeutic and satisfying, at least when the stab wounds heal when you first start.

Yeh, that was a concern. And not to let the missus see it, or she may get ideas about using it on me.

Incredible how many pieces of trim/ fixings go missing over time.

Luckily I had some of these early washer caps in stock. I think I may have got the last few new ones?

I also need to find two of theses. They are for the screws for the rear carpets upright.
Totally different to the later models.
The holes they sit in are even biggger, so I can’t replace them with the later version.
I haven’t found the part number yet...

Delighted to see that this has been picked up by someone who will pamper it in the way it deserves. Very sad that it needs quite so much remedial attention though. The reason I sold it was that it wouldn't fit down the cobbled street and round the corner to my garage, and I couldn't bear to leave it sitting outside. Turns out that wasn't one of my better decisions, ho-hum.

The lambswool rugs were the originals and in very good condition, so it's a shame they have gone, too. I hope it still came with the rafts of service history and documented resto work? I'm guessing the accompanying pewter XJ40 and Daimler pen have also gone walkies, but by handing those over I probably appeared pretty obsessive anyway!

Hi, good to hear from you.

On balance I think all 40s are a mix of good and bad. None are perfect, especially for an experienced owner like me, who knows all the places to look for issues/ faults/ missing/ broken items.

Out of interest, when did you sell it? I don’t know your (real) name clearly, but an wondering how many owners it’s been through since you? The past owner is near me here, just north of Boston, Lincs. Was there another in between him and you?
I can work out who has “lost” the rugs!

The pen and model were not present no.
But the S/H with Restoration picture book is thankfully present. So it’s not all bad.

Onto the next thing.

Aerial. It was fully up when I bought it, so technically able to receive a signal. But of course it would retract on its own. With a bit of coaxing and lube it eventually went down, but it became quickly evident that the toothed plastic cable had broken. As I could move the mast in and out by hand. The motor was operating at least, which is good news. So it should simply be a case of replacing the mast. I have a few spares in stock. But here’s one I made earlier. So a quick swap over and hey presto, a working aerial.
I will refurbish the other unit too.
Early and late plugs are of course different, but otherwise the units are identical (excluding 94 model version which are different again).

Fuel filler gator. Swapped over for a non leaking one. These are well known to fall to pieces, so no surprises.
£60+ from Jag. But I managed to salvage one instead.
Quite a fiddling job with an awkward angle, tight space, and very small fiddly screws the hold the clamp for the rubber.

Well Worth doing though to save having a damp musty boot, ruined carpet, rusty floor, failing electrics! All that could happen because of a failing thin piece of rubber.

True to say been there a few times Naki_k myself ... That filler gaiter a right royal pain in the "A". Aerials on the other hand, quite enjoy getting stuff working again that's not obviously worked well for a while ....

Yes, I know it’s the same old stuff on all these cars now. But it needs doing.
