An update for the L527KWC file.

Mothering Sunday was the first proper outing of the year and the old girl (car) disgraced herself by resuming the difficult starting and eventual coughing and spluttering into life accompanied by loud pops and bangs that have been an on/off feature of the car over the years. All this with a car full of senior ladies outside a posh hotel so slightly embarrassing.

There is another current XJ81 thread where the car has starting problems and a possible cause - as with mine has been an air leak on the induction system. I decided to change the plug leads anyway as these were the originals and whilst at it have a thorough check of all the vacuum hoses.

Note the difference in thickness between the old and new ignition leads:

Image

Checking the rubber blanking plugs under the inlet manifolds I found a mixed selection of rubber items in use. I think this is probably what they should be:

Image

One was not sealing properly so lacking anything else I resorted to the short bit of hose with a bolt screwed in the end.

More significant was this hose under the A bank which feeds the auxiliary air valve and has a T off to the distributor:

Image

The manifold end was only secured by a cable tie and was not air tight. Also there was this angle piece which does not look original and the thin pipe to the distributor was a length of fuel pipe.

Image

This is where the t off joins the distributor, fiddly to get at.

Image

I imagine that all these loose connections, although none were major leaks individually, added up to a significant loss of vacuum.

Anyway, it seems to have done the trick and now (fingers crossed) starts on the button.

Good fix chris. With so many vacuum hoses and those blanking caps. So much potential for leaks.

I seem to remember checking the blanks were there years ago, but I guess they can deteriorate?
With all that heat above the exhausts too.

Finally after 5 years and several almost fixes I may have properly resolved the poor starting problem with this car.

This was a typical attempt to start the car (ignore the fan belt squeal)

And now it fires up instantly and ticks over smoothly hot or cold even after a week standing. All I did was reseat all the relays on the engine bulkhead. I think one was an 02 sensor relay and the other was the fuel pump.

Excellent news Chris.

Out of interest, which leads did you use? Are they the genuine leads from JCP?

We'll have to have a 1066 breakfast at some point to celebrate the cars being back on the road! Although you'll need to bring both of yours seeing as they have both had work recently! I'm sure that's possible right!?!

Hi Richard

The leads came from Berkshire jag components. I see they have one set of lh1509AA leads remaining on eBay and seem very good value.

Yes, 1066 is calling. May be best if you pick a date that fits in with your work schedule? I can pretty much do any Sunday. I think Rory was keen too.

Ahh, that's excellent. I have been meaning to finalise my order of leads and Lucas ignition coils from Berkshire Jag - so good to know they get another endorsement.

I'll be home next on Tuesday 4th December. Perhaps Sunday 9th could be a possible festive breakfast?

Regardless of the lack of mileage, it’s always an achievement. We all know how much can go wrong in a year, even if it hasn’t moved.
