1987 Daimler XJ40, Moorland Green, low mileage

Postby Monkfish » Wed Sep 21, 2016 4:10 pm

A cursory 'Hello!' from me before introducing my new baby. It's been over a year since I've owned a Jaguar and therefore high time I remedied the situation. Mrs. Monkfish and I are due to be first time parents within the week and I've long-since held romantic visions of future family day trips in a suitably interesting, yet not too decrepit, old car; a Jaguar fits the bill perfectly. I was ready to put my search on hold for a few months until the following car appeared almost literally on my doorstep (well, within the same postcode).

I love the early digi-dash cars, and although I'm aware they have more foibles to look out for than later models, this low-miler with a fascinating provenance and bags of history is the perfect example for me. A quick search has thrown up a few older photos of it already circulating within the site, so a few of the more die-hard members may recognise her. As with any old car, stately or otherwise, I will have a few very minor jobs to keep me busy in between nappy changing, but I'm already absolutely smitten with my new purchase. Current mileage is just under 37,000, and here come some hastily grabbed phone pics. I'll keep this updated as we go along and add some proper photos and further details as time allows.

Looks good, the pics definitely confirm the very low mileage!

Good buy i am sure. Moorlands Green is quite a rare colour too.
For the record, I don't actually think the early cars "have more issues" than later models. Just "some different issues". Mainly low brake pressure, ABS warnings, fragile door handles and cracked solder on the digital dash.
Besides that, it's simply a matter of they are older cars, so with increased age, brings more potential for issues. But a well looked after 3.6, should be no more trouble than any other 40.
All issues are fixable too, so even if you encounter any of the standard failures, there's no reason to let them impede your progress!

I think this car has been floating around for a few years.
Nice it's found an enthusiastic owner now, as its been with a dealer or two along the way.

Seems to have had some good bodywork some too.

Very nice looking machine you have there! I've not seen many moorland green cars - looks a lovely and unusual colour.

Yes i remember it well , about five years ago at the Bromley pageant , as i recalled at the time it was in remarkable condition and a most striking green , i'm glad it's found a home and come to join us here , hopefully she'll be ready in time to collect the missus and new baby from hospital when ready to come home :)

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Yes, it's had bodywork below the swage line at the end of 2014. Thankfully the bodyshop have done a superb job, with no discernible difference in colour or finish between the new and original paint. I've also got a nice keepsake: a photo album detailing the work carried out. The wheels have also been freshly refurbished within the last few years so she's still looking very good indeed.

The previous owner kept it for a good 5 years and was definitely an enthusiast! I can see how it may have attracted the attention of dealers in the past, though. One thing is for certain, it won't be for sale again for a LONG time!

I guess the previous owner must have bought it around the time of Derek's pictures, as there's a for sale sign in the window at 21,705 miles!

So whereabouts in the country does it reside now ? , are we likely to see you with it at our meetings :)

I think your car would have been a contender for best car at our recent meet at Dunkeld ,
