Only Jaguar could possibly create this level of confusion and complexity all within one model.

It’s all interesting stuff!

I’ll have to try and find the build date out when I get a chance.

I can only assume it’s an early V12 that for some reason was not registered until March 1994.

I guess I’ll need a heritage certificate for it then. Know what I’ll be asking for Christmas!

Perhaps Jag Heritage can also enlighten me about its early days as a Jaguar company car too.

The info I have ( which could be wrong  ) is that the V12 was introduced December 1992, 1993.25 model year commencing from chassis 673299.

1994 model year was introduced August 1993 just after the annual shutdown ? from Chassis 687219 up to the last car 708757 ( M94 FVC ) produced in May 1994.

Using those numbers and your chassis number you could take a stab at which month it was built.

sometimes development cars are held back for some tinkering to be been carried out by the factory and then released for sale......?

My car is chassis 676860 - so that makes it a 1993.25MY car then.

If the 1993.25MY cars were introduced in December 1992 - mine must have been manufactured in early 1993(ish).

I wonder what happened to it for a year then?

Perhaps I should get a heritage certificate - just to nail to build date down and find out! :?:

Taking into account your chassis number and the fact it was only 3561 cars ( about a months production, 3.2, 4.0, and V12 ) from V12 introduction then yes it sounds like an early production car and yes it could have been held back as Vince says for development work. There could be other reasons, paint fault, body damage etc ( which is maybe why it was a Jaguar demo and not sent out for retail ) but you will probably never find out.

We once put a new shell on a Mondeo that had fell off a train  it was then bought by the delivery agents Tolemans ?? and used by them as a company car. :o

Just to add my bit again!!

I have a list of chassis numbers from JDHT dated 2012 showing 12cyl introduced 1993/02 chassis 674582(?)

Even that has a question mark so they arent sure either!!

It also lists the dates 1993/02 with chassis number 674609 & 1993/09 with chassis number 687219 for all XJ40 models.

So your car is defiantely between Jan 1993 and Sept 1993

I believe mine is July 94
Image

Also my XJS is in the same position....its on a P plate so a 1996 reg number but the chassis number show it is a 1995/01 model!!!

674609 looks like a correct build month for that chassis number.
687219 is the first 94 model year chassis for all engines.
As always with Jaguar there is no definitive answer, we can only guesstimate, ish ;)
I used that chart amongst other info to collate my model year/vin range/landmarks matrix, I think I excluded 674582 as being questionable.
