Daimler Double Six

Postby FindTheRiver » Sun Sep 07, 2014 11:25 am

Hi All

My first post! I'm a lifelong Jaguar enthusiast (JEC member) and my second ever car was a 1993 4.0 Sovereign (K902 DMO if I recall correctly. Anyone know what's happened to it?!). The XJ40 was the Jag I longed for my dad to buy as a kid in the late '80s and '90s, so I worked two jobs whilst at uni to buy my 134k mile example in 2003 (cosmetically mint though!).

I'm now looking to go back and experience the XJ40 again, and am thinking I might go for the Daimler Double Six that Danny at jaguardaimler.co.uk has - http://jaguardaimler.co.uk/stocklist/stock.aspx?id=150

Appreciate it isn't cheap, but quality service and condition of the car are more important to me than getting an absolute steal (my mechanic skills are zero sadly). Do any of you have any experience with him, and any advice about a V12? Naki has kindly mentioned the ignition fire issue and I know from reading this forum that cooling can be marginal. Anything else to consider?

Thanks all, if I get it hope I might be able to bring it to the meet on the 20th if you'll have me!

Hi Chris

Welcome to the forum/club. I think that car has been for sale for a while.

If its solid in all over and as good as it sounds then an offer would be worth making.

V12s need a bit of looking after but nothing untoward. Service every year, coolant/stats change every 2 years and, if it has 'cats', coils, plugs, rotor arm and dist. cap need replacing regularly. It will probably have a slight oil leak but a Jag mechanic said to me all V12s do, just keep an eye on the oil level.

Check history for regular suspension checks and for engine mount replacements. These can wear a bit more with a V12 sat in there!

Also mine was up for a similar price and I am extremely happy with the car!

Hi and a big welcome to the forum!! you don't do things by half do you! What a brave young man taking on a V12 and fair play to you too! Look out for wear to suspension bushes front and rear as that is a big old lump to power over 2 ton of car!

Thanks both, will do my best to check it out properly. Danny seems very decent so fingers crossed it's a proper example.

I'm not sure it's bravery or naivety! I am used to large running costs - big engines etc and this will be garaged and used very sparingly so hopefully I'll be able to keep it in top condition! Seeing it Wednesday so will post a few pics if it all goes ahead!

The excitement is building - haven't driven an XJ40 for over 10 years!

Hi Chris, you have come out of the lurking shadows finally!
the car has potential for sure. but view and test drive with your eyes open. and make sure you get it up in the air.
At this price, i would expect it to be faultless really. Press every button, make sure absolutely everything works, including air con/ all heaters, central locking, all windows, sunroof, seat heaters.
i would ask for it to go on a lift to be able to do a full underside inspection. many problems start from underneath, out of sight.
low mileage doesn't always mean without faults and perfect condition. but its a good start.

also make sure you get some revs going on the test drive (long stretch of road required.
if the secondary fuel pump is failing (common fault), i think they only kick in at 2800rpm, then it will falter at these higher revs. low mileage car will have to have spend long periods without use, and thats exactly how the secondary fuel pumps fail (lack of use). if you dont do it yourself, to change a fuel pump, plus part, i reckon will set you back £500 at least at a garage.

listen for any knocking noises when driving.

lift the front carpets and underlay and feel the floor metal with your hand for any signs of damp or water.
check all along the bulkhead for any rot. common on late cars, and can lead to water ingress.

if you are not confident about inspecting the car, take a mechanic with you, or have it driven to a jag specialist for an inspection.
i think the car is near London is it??
try this place

would have been nice to get a description of the cars condition on the advert dont you think? :?
