whats important is do you want to take on a project? would you do all the work yourself, or farm it out to a garage?
Reading between the lines, i am guessing you are really looking for 40 in very good condition all over (and not just on top).
On balance, i would say leave it. You are better off with a higher mileage car in better all round condition, as you will end up spending more than the difference to put that car right.

Not really, I know the reality that all older cars need work, and with a smaller budget for purchase I have never been under any illusion that I would get a very good condition all round car and I have no issue with work needing done, as that's just a fact of life with any ageing car, never mind a car that's not far off the same age as me.

The work would be getting done mostly by my neighbour who has a workshop, and with a car that needs work I would be looking to do it over a period of time and build it back up to as good as it can be, getting the major work done in the first instance that will make it safe, road worthy and legal, and the lesser items such as cosmetics can be worked on in time.

Now although I have owned 3 Jaguars (2 X-Types and an 07 XJ6) I have never owned a 40 and all I have really go on is me growing up with my dads 5 XJ40's between 1987 and 1994 and everything I've read over the past 15 years online, that's why I need people like you who have these cars today, and who face theses issues today, as it's essential, so it's good to have your knowledge and opinions, and it helps me reach the right decision, such as this car for example.

ok, good , that helps to know. Its hard to give advice to people, until we know their stand point on work needing to be done.
If you are confident and willing to tackle most jobs, including rust and bodywork, between yourself and the neighbour, then by all means buy a cheaper car needing work. its the best way to learn about these cars afterall. pull them apart and put it all back together again, and you will get to know XJ40 inside out.

Exactly, though I've not checked last nights lottery, I could well be sitting with the money to go buy that light blue Sovereign with 21k for £8,000 ;)

Be patient and you will find one that's about the same price that doesn't need lots of welding , i know it's hard when the money is burning a hole in your pocket but believe me there are some bargains to be had , just got to be a bit patient ;)
