New front wings - in fibreglass!

Postby carlmt » Wed Sep 27, 2017 12:36 pm

Afternoon all

I have a professional relationship with a very good fabricator and will be visiting him in a couple of weeks relating to our model ships.

Now, this chap also produces replica sports car body panels for the well-heeled clients who race exotic sports cars such as Ferraris and Masseratis - particularly the rarer 1950's and 60's cars. These panels are painted and fitted to their cars in place of the originals to preserve the original panels in case of accidents on the track. What I am leading to is this : I am going to have a chat with him about the feasibility of having a couple of moulds made from a pair of good XJ40 front wings with a view to producing fibreglass replicas to replace our rotting steel ones.

I am thinking along the following lines:
The existing wings are NLA
They are not structural
The initial cost of the tooling could be 'interesting' (as an example - a mould for one of our ship hulls, 1.6m long by 30cm wide by 20cm high, costs £1000)
I will need a pair of good wings to act as a pattern to produce the mould - this process will not damage the wing
To cover the initial costs, I may be looking to 'crowdfund' it from within our ranks - spread the cost between us - with a corresponding reduction in retail cost of the finished wings to those who initially contributed
The final costs of the wings would possibly be in the region of £100 each (based upon the costs I pay for the ship hulls produced from the above example mould)
The moulds would belong to the Club (John - will need to speak with you in more detail if this gets off the ground) - or we sell the moulds to the likes of SNG or XJRestorations (I would favour the latter) once we have all had our fill from them.

OK - Discussion is open..................

It would be interesting to see one fitted/ painted.
Does anyone know of a car that's actually fitted one? I wonder how many they have sold.

They are only advertising a right hand wing - no sign of a left - and at nigh on £200 each, are not likely to have sold many.

From my experience, that is a hell of a mark-up, after the initial development cost has been recouped.

From the photos it doesnt look to be that 'crisp' either - need to see one in the flesh really..........

Cannot see any feedback for them either.......

In the UK, most replacement wings needed by body shops would be RH ..why? Because you drive on the left and the most prevalent collisions occur meeting on-coming traffic.

It's the opposite case with a LHD car, the most in-demand wing would be LH.

Of course this doesn't address the rust issue, only collision.

Thinking out loud.....we need to find out if these wings on ebay are any good, lack of feedback may tell its own story...... Either he hasn't sold any or if he has he has not been given feedback.

Lets be honest here, £200 for the wing plus ~£150 for paint plus fitting for a car that often cost £1500 at most, doesnt rly make much sense hence minimal interest/feedback. If the wing was lets say £50-70 like with many eg Mercedes wings, or even £100 then we would see a lot more interest in them.

I have rear fibreglass quarters on my XJS and they are excellent quality and I would not hesitate getting front wing in fiberglass if I needed one/they were cheaper.

1994, 3.2S XJ40 - Long gone.
