Fish tank headlight reflectors

Postby Powerbut » Fri Jun 10, 2016 12:00 am

As a new owner of an XJ40 I'm wondering if there is a way of rechroming the reflectors or whether I should look to buy new units? They seem quite expensive to buy though. Any advice would be welcomed, my nearside unit is looking a little sad but not yet an MOT failure.

If you are a very neat/handy person, you could try adhering mylar/spaceblanket material to the surface. In fact any highly reflective material would work ...trick would be fitting it without creases ...if you find a self-adhesive flexible chrome material and want to re-position it during fitting, a liberal application of soapy water on the surface will help - when you have the exact fit, squeegee the soapy water out and press firmly.

"Chrome" paint will not really look like chrome, more like gray with a few aluminum sparkles ..no good for headlights :(

Previous discussions were perhaps inconclusive.
But it might be worth getting quotes to have them professionally rechromed.

Thank you, I contacted a rechroming guy but he was unsure about the base metal that the reflector is made from. I guess the biggest problem will be taking them out and dismantling the units. If anyone has advice on this I'd be grateful.

Hi there. I did manage to get my Fishtanks out and had a idea that worked well it would have if I'd had a bit more patience. What I did was drill a hole in the light just above the bevel part of the inside. Then I put a spare bulb in sealed it off with masking tape the poured aluminium paint just to cover the rusty parts. Then removed the bulb to drain the excess paint and Yes it Worked? Until I tilted the light and some paint ran onto the glass! If I had waited until the paint had dried it would have worked. I have some pictures I took as I did it. But I can't send them on here but I can send them on EBay if you would like. Russ

I think the standard method is put them in the oven on low, so the heat will soften the bonding. Or with a heat gun.
Maybe some windscreen removal type cheese wire/ and sharp knife?
Will be a bit of trial and error I suspect.
