Wanted door lock cylinder set

Postby cedriccools » Sun Sep 17, 2017 10:04 am

I am looking for a complete lock set for my jaguar xj40 sovereign 1989 model.

I can lock the car, but cant unlock as there is that much play in the lock.

Is there a place where I can find a set for the front doors and the boot?

Doesnt need to be new

Is it the older style flat key or the later style Tibbe (Ford) key ??

Common fault with worn (Ford) keys, they will lock but not unlock. Have you tried a new key, it might do the job ??

I only have 1 key, but i think the problem is the lock cylinder. Also the key I have doesnt fit on the boot. Isnt there a complete set available?

Lots of options, first I would take your old key to an auto lock specialist, get them to read the number off the key, get a new key cut and try it out. Secondly, lock repair kits are available, if you can find them, these contain all the little lock plates to enable you to rebuild the lock barrel to the original key pattern. Third, you could buy a full set of used door handles and boot lock to replace yours. I would try the first option first as it is the cheapest. Also the boot lock has to be in the correct position to work, have you checked it is correct. ??

Good suggestion on cutting a new key.
There's also some adjustment in the lock/ latch mechanisms.

If you do need a full set, I may be able to help.
PM for details.

I can recall having to take new examples of these later lock barrels apart and change the individual tumblers around so they all fitted the same key! So I am not sure if a full new lock set ever existed. But as it was easier to do this than to change the ignition lock that may well be why we did it! It was about 25 years ago now so I can not recall the details.
You may end up having to do the same.
However you may be lucky if you try to clean the locks up with WD40 and then add a bit of oil??
WD40 on its own will evaporate so is no good as a lubricant.

Also if it is any help you can get the lock number from the key and then have a new one cut to that same number. See this web page:
