Thanks Steve and JR for allowing me to have my own little section of xj40.com for the ever growing and successful XJ40 Register project (and thanks for the new title too).
The Register is now in to its third year and has amassed a whopping 42,000 cars from all over the world and is the only XJ40 resource of its kind. Most other brands and models have their own form of Register, so I have made sure that XJ40 is no different. This is even more important now that Jaguar have started to purge old information from their system and soon there will be no mention of XJ40 on their databases (pre-Dec 1989 cars have already been purged). Jaguar Corporate are well aware of this project and am very lucky to be proceeding with their complete support!!!
Most of my work is done on http://www.facebook.com/xj40register
but I will be utilising this section on here and promoting the project along with the good people who make it happen, in partnership with xj40.com.
As mentioned on the old Register thread on a different section of the site, the aim one day is to make this an interactive resource, but that is a long way off. As amazing as what 42,000 is, its still a long way off 208,733 cars and I have many ideas and additions of what I want to do before then, and the register isn't just a collection of data, its also a complete colour, price, stat, history guide to all things 40. And when it does eventually go live, it will need to be done with consideration to the people who have provided their car info in confidence and in a way I can control who sees it and ensure the highest standard is maintained. However, that is a long way off....
For those of you who may be new to the site and don't know what the register is, it was really started by accident. When I bought M105 FVC, I wanted to know more of its past and looked in to the FVC batch of cars, and made a list. Then I bought my LWB Majestic and wanted to know about them and compiled a database on Majestic's and then it just expanded to every XJ40 from the pre-production cars from 1983 right up to M94 FVC, the last 40 ever built in June 1994, and here we are today.
It has not been an easy journey! This takes up a hell of a lot of time - seriously. And although not so much these days, but in the first couple of years there was the "tinfoil hat club" who tried to make life hard with issues and accusations such as it being a way for me to steal identities, promote fuel theft, dig in to peoples lives (even though I don't record owner info), and for them to be passive aggressive and just be a general pain in the hole. Thankfully 99% of the rest of the people have been sensible and I have met many new friends as part of this project, have stopped people losing a lot of money, stopped people from being conned, educated new 40 owners about what they have or are looking to buy, and managed to get rid of a lot of errors and incorrect facts. None of this would happen without the majority of the XJ40 community coming together in support.
The register will power on, I'm 32 years old and hopefully have a lot of years to campaign for XJ40 and build up a resource which is already becoming unmatched for stats. I attend a lot of events and this year I want to get some pop up banners made up and promote the Register project when I take my 40's to displays. It will never become a fee paying entity. I have over 800 active contributors (not bad eh?) and that number continues to grow each week, but it will never become a business, but as stated before I do want it to become something I can represent at events and bring in more support for our great cars. It will also never become a competitor to other fan based platforms such as this forum, I prefer to work in partnership rather than in competition, which is where myself and JR agree to support each other.
So that's it in a nutshell...thank you again to those on here who have helped so far, and here's to the next 42,000 cars and many years of Register building.
