Code 3 S Type Police conversion

Postby donkeyotty » Wed Dec 05, 2018 9:40 pm

So, I have been given an 1/18th scale Maisto S type and sorry Carl, but it is a little errr boring.........

Image

So, what to do with it :? Paint it like this ??

Image

Well maybe not

So, I had an idea  I vaguely remember seeing some Police demonstrator S types in various publications and on the net so that's what it is about to become. Just to explain the Code 3 bit :?: these are models that are altered from the manufactures spec, could be just swopping a trailer or a paint job or a complete reworking.
So, did a bit of research on tinternet and found some pictures and info. It seems the two demonstrators T801BRP and T802BRP are still with us, both have current MOT, one is sorn and one is taxed. A little bit of luck then came my way when I saw that the recent Ian Cooling auction had a lot consisting of a press pack and photos of both cars, but bugger I missed the auction. However they did not sell so I made an offer which has been accepted and I await their arrival as a brilliant work of reference for the task ahead.

So, onto the strip down, that only took 15 minutes, :D

Image

Fully stripped,

Image

Thankfully with a bit of patience it came apart with only one lug breaking on the exhaust, easy repair, phew.

So into the workshop for stripping,

Image

Then set to with the 2500 grade and spent an hour flatting and perfecting it.

Image

So, that's where I am up to at the moment, just need to source battenburg, police decals, light bar, Police Slow signs, traffic cones etc and it should look like this

I will update the thread as work progresses.

I shall be looking forward to updates on this thread as this used to be a particular interest of mine many years ago, before I was officially old enough to own a car.

I used to horrify, then surprise family members by taking similar models apart and stripping them before repainting and modifying them.

So on to the painting, took a couple of hours with a toothpick to get every tiny bit of paint off the body then a coat of etch primer, followed by another flatting down.
Image
Followed by 3 coats of white.

Image

Just needs a good polish but leaving it for a couple of weeks to harden off.
Cannot understand why my wife will not let me spray paint in the kitchen so I am banished to the workshop where the cold and damp does not help with trying to get a good finish. My Dad always taught me warm paint, warm air, and warm item to achieve a finish, well one out of three will have to do at the moment, boiling water helping to warm the paint and avoid spatter.

Image

Beige is not really the choice of Police forces so I will be painting all of the interior with satin black. Might try and do some detailing with silver and walnut, depends on how steady my hand is.

Image

Had a bit of a disaster when I used paint stripper on the rear bumper spoiler, classic mistake, much swearing followed  It will have to be filled and sanded to regain its shape dohhh

Image

Battenburg and chevron have not arrived yet ( Christmas post :( ) but the number plates have arrived and they look great. Got to paint the front number plate surround before fitting though as well as the door top trims and B post covers so still plenty to do. Looks like I am going to struggle to get the correct light bar but I am still looking and hoping.

Looking good Don!

Now we know what people with a thoroughly sorted ‘40 do through the winter months

This is the number plate listing.

1/18 scale battenburg and chevron is readily available.
Just put the seats back together after painting, left the handbrake beige for a bit of contrast but it does not look right so I think I will paint it.

If it was a model ‘40, we’d all be advising you sort the rust in the bulk head whilst you’ve got that dash out!
