Stones and Lights

Postby baldilocks » Sat Mar 02, 2019 10:19 pm

Doing pre WOF checks and work on James I found 2 stone chips/cracks in windscreen so went and got them glued, so all good. However, must have been a bad day somewhere with poor seal as also found this.

WIndscreen guys were unable to do anything them selves but did suggest using protective film, its legal and will stop it coming apart, should also get through WOF as at least damage is out of the main beam.
So onwards yesterday with the protector kit, made template, to cut to size.

And then fitted.

A little late but at least passenger protected and should extend life of drivers one, but am now looking for a good second hand replacement. I know available new but will be over $600 for just one headlamp by time it gets here, gets taxed etc.

That’s a good idea with the film. But will that stop the glass cracking? Or stop a crack extending?

Shame on your headlamp. The reflector looks perfect too. Unlike most on the U.K. with corroding reflectors.

Its a wait and see on crack extending, I am hoping at least it will stop it falling out and get through a couple of WOFs. Will find out on next one very shortly.

You can try filling it with clear epoxy and taping over it to hold in the epoxy till it sets up. That's what they fill windscreen cracks with too, but I think the surface has to be absolutely flat to use the windscreen tool... a fair job can be done with the tape though and any hairlines can later be filled by touching up with krazy glue. That should stop any further crack migration.

Finally got to WOF today, no issues with the fishtank...but irony of irony the H4 blew dipped beam, sometime between checking it yesterday and the test, so failed on that, fortunately easily and swiftly sorted.

Good result overall.
Cars have a habit of springing a surprise at the worst moment.
One of mine decided to put the air bag light on mid test this week. (LR D2).
