Webmaster Position

Postby j_r » Thu Sep 28, 2017 4:44 pm

Hi All,

Due to other commitments Roel has decided to stand down from his position as the forums web master.

Over the years he has done amazing work improving the forum and not forgetting he recovered the forum following a major database failure. Without his hard work I doubt this forum would exist.

Words dont seem enough to thank Roel for all his hard work and dedication and I certainly owe him some beer and wine tokens next time we meet :D

With this in mind do any of you wish to volunteer your services and take over the Web Master position?

If you are interested can you email me on jbratcli@hotmail.com

I would like to echo John's thanks to Roel for the work he has put into this Forum and wish him well in his future endeavors.

As for stepping into his shoes - I wouldnt have the first clue as to what is required. A complete technophobe me. But it might be an idea, John, to jot down a few words here as to what is involved with the post so that folk might give it some thought. It might be that it is more simple than I imagine.............

That's a good idea Carl. Here we go, just off the top of my head:

Technical knowledge / experience:
- Experience with standard web hosting, specifically in a Linux environment
- Basic knowledge of DNS, HTTP(S), SSL/TLS
- Understanding of SMTP and basic mail transport
- Some basic experience with Linux CLI
- Knowledge of PLESK control panel and PHPmyAdmin
- Experience with PHP, HTML, JavaScript, jQuery, MySQL
- Experience with MySQL database administration, design and development
- Knowledge of PHPbb software, including administration
- Working knowledge of web services
- Experience with Google Search API and Analytics
- Basic knowledge of SEO

Tasks include:
- Helping members with technical issues, swiftly diagnose and resolve where possible
- Liaise with the hosting provider and other 3rd parties where necessary
- Agree, specify and develop improvements to the forum software
- Review analytics and utilization stats, act accordingly
- Maintain the forum's SEO profile
- Identify potential/upcoming problems and proactively resolve where possible

Not all of these are vital though, and it probably sounds a lot more daunting than it really is, so please don't be put off if there are a few things in the list you don't know, it's more of a guideline.

A full handover will be provided and I'm always happy to assist going forward. Unfortunately I'm just no longer able to do this "full-time", but it's been a pleasure to have been able to contribute in this way and of course I'll still remain a member.

I have some knowledge and experience of created MySQL for hosting wordpress. I got very into SEO etc a few years ago when attempting to launch a few websites but I suffered from perfectionism and never got there. I've used Linux and its command line in the past too but wouldn't say I know it like I used to know MS-DOS 'back in the day'.

I suppose it's a tentative enquiry but I'm wary of how much of my time I'd have to devote to it. I don't mind doing but it can't take over if you follow.

I've always wondered why this forum doesn't have a front end website which is more like a club? I feel, and I'm sure you'll all agree, interest in the XJ40 is growing.....should it be developed?

As for the technical side, I had my first '40 in 2002 and went through it from front to back. I don't know everything, but I reckon I know a fair bit.

Hi All,

SteveMC has volunteered to take up the position of Webmaster, taking over the fantastic work done by Roel.

In recognition of Roels hard work and the fact he saved the forum after a major database failure I have assigned him the rank of "Forum Hero"

As life and servers are unpredictable things the first test was the outage we have had over the last couple of days caused by a problem with database and as you can see this has been fixed and we are now up and running.

Id also like to thank all the others who offered to help with the Webmaster position.
