Oil breather kit

Postby katar83 » Mon Feb 05, 2018 4:09 pm

Anyone fitted this to their 40? I've only recently found out that Jag had this kit fitted for people who complained about sticky TB, kit is for x300 but xj40 has the same oil pipe going into the plastic elbow as far as I remember. I've bought it, they are cheaply available on eBay and will fit it in soon, just wondering whether someone here might have retrofitted it to their 40. Its clearly a must for AJ6 and AJ16 considering how dirty the TB can get.

eBay item number:231100065614
1996, 3.2 SWB X300 - Relatively rust free daily driver!
1997, 4.0 LWB X300 - Unlucky car, sold 10.2020!.
1988, 3.6S XJS - Never ending restoration project.
1994, 3.2S X300 - Accident damaged, 10.2015. Gone!
1994, 3.2S XJ40 - First Jaaaag, long gone.

One pic only but instructions here:

Same idea applies to XJ40 and yes, apparently it stops the oil vapour going into TB. After 3 hours of cleaning my TB I now know why its a good idea

Apparently the restrictor valve that is included in the kit is not needed. More info in this thread:

Sounds like a good idea.
I note the drain hose in the illustration? So it can drip some oily mess on the drive? I wonde if a small container could be added to collect the oil?

I know other cars have an crank case breather filter. Which is a mesh of wire really. But also those then need cleaning out (or replacing), as they inevitably get clogged instead of the TB.

Nothing changes, I had a similar system on my Commando 40 years ago, it drained into a Newcastle Brown tin, highly visible and very fashionable

Nope, there is a replacement oil dipstick with basically a Y section in the middle and the drain is connected to it so the fumes/oil go back to the oil pan.
I'm hoping to fit it in tomorrow, should be an easy job hopefully.

This thread and an occasional stumble over the last couple of weeks got me motivated - I went "alternate route" yesterday ...oh well she's running like a top again :P
