Facebook groups vs this forum? Can of worms?

Can of worms? Facebook groups vs this forum?

I suspect this may be slightly controversial.
I know a lot of members on here use the FB jaguar groups as well as this forum, but I think there’s quite a few members who have effectively drifted away from this forum and only use/ predominantly use the FB groups now? I have a few theories on this.

At some point in the past year I was made an Admin (without knowing?) on the 40/ 300 enthusiast page. This has given me an insight into how many new members are registering on that one page EVERY DAY! On average 8-15 new member requests every day! I don’t know for sure how many new members register here, but I would guess maybe 10-15 a month? Perhaps John can confirm?

Does anyone else feel like the this forum is loosing out on activity/ new members?

Clearly FB is a global phenomenon, and branches out into all of society now. But it doesn’t offer a searchable database of knowledge. This forum does. But what FB seems to do is offer immediacy and integrated convenice for the typical user.
Posts on FB to me seem to be transient. Posts are there, then fall off into the abyss?
There’s no long term build threads on there?

Where FB wins hands down is the picture hosting. Members like the convenience of click and upload images quickly and easily. Unfortunately this forum has been unable to quite offer that to date. Though the image hosting by Roel is a generous stop gap, people inevitably prefer a system that doesn’t involve copying and pasting IMG codes. (Yes people are lazy, and will always favour quick convenience). “User friendly”.

There will of course be some members who don’t use FB at all.
Me. I hardly used FB until fairly recently. Now found myself being “drawn in”. Though mostly I find the majority posts on there less interesting than posts on here. But there is some unique content on there, that would never find its way here, if it wasn’t manually migrated. (The post on the S/C XJR development 40, that Carsie copies over).
I still favour this forum as a whole, though find myself wondering whether further improvements are needed here over the long term, to keep new members coming in and keep the forum platform competitive. Peoples attention does need competing for now, with so much on offer on the internet.
You Tube anyone?

I have to agree with you Naki. FB is an excellent platform for the day to day chat about cars, but I think this forum is far better for the Long term threads and technical information.
There is room for both I think.

I have often looked to see if this forum has a presence on Facebook. I thought I had found it, and sent a join request, which has been pending for longer than I care to remember now. However, given that there is no activity despite over 100 members makes me wonder what it is.

A compromise would perhaps be to have a FB page for day to day chat and people could post photos of meets and their cars/cats/dinners/whatever. It would be possible to link updates from this forum too by having share facilities on the website. This would enable prove to see when someone updates their build thread by posting a link to it.

It would be important to establish some rules at the start, covering swearing/politics/offensive comments etc. While Facebook is great for keeping in touch, it can also be a very destructive place when certain topics are broached.

That's my tuppence worth. I'll still frequent and enjoy this forum though whatever happens.

I too was wondering whether it was possible to remotely link this site to a FB forum page, where all new posts are remotely updated/ posted simultaneously? Thus getting the best of both platforms in place?
Or is that just science fiction?

As an experime t I have just copied the web link or address for this page/thread and posted it onto my Facebook page.
It worked and the link was there for all to see.

So yes, it is possible to have the best of both worlds!

Whats facebook?

TBH, phpbb can already be integrated with FB, login info easily plus there are extensions to integrate it further, eg share posts, etc, info eg here:

I agree that this forum is a good source of information for these cars and people can benefit from the knowledge shared by others on here.

Certain members on here would help the lack of activity situation by being more considerate to others expressing alternative opinions, so they are retained. The dispute on the "Spotted Today" thread (taking place around Sunday 15 April 2018) is a good example of this kind of behavior.

If you think that dispute was bad, you should see some of the language and lack of respect that thrown around on FB! It’s more a Wild West on there, with no one to govern the content/ comments.
