Matt Black Rear Number Plate Panel

Postby Ballard » Sun Aug 18, 2019 9:50 pm

Was trying to remember the last time I saw one of the very early XJ40s with a matt black rear number plate panel. Must be many years ago. Anyone on here own one? Or anyone got photos of one they can put up? I can't remember if they looked good or not.

Was it just the Daimlers that had this feature? And how long done did they continue doing it for? Seem to remember it was only for the first year of production. Seems quite an odd and eccentric thing to do, particularly by the mid 80s. Something I think I've only seen elsewhere on 70s muscle cars.

I don’t know when they stopped doing it or which models had it. The only thing I do know is I’m not a fan of it at all! Body coloured is a much cleaner look.

Matt's silver Daimler has a black back panel. I must admit, I really like it! Even to the extent of having mine sprayed!

1 vote for and 1 against!

Hope someone's got a photo. Could only find a tiny photo on google and that was at a funny angle. Couldn't really judge what I thought. It certainly intrigues me. One of the many curious aspects of the car that separated it from the German competition of the time.

I remember the early TR7 had the black panel between the rear lights too.....maybe it was a 70s thing??

Very early XJS too.

Since writing my original post I also remembered the Triumph TR6 and Dolomite Sprint had black rear panels. Forgotten about the TR7. Must have been a popular feature at the Triumph factory. Also, sure I've seen it on some Triumph Stags.

Wow! Thanks pimgmx. Those are great photos. Really interesting. I assumed the panel was painted black but from the photo it appears to be an all in one plastic fascia attached to the number plate light surround. I actually think it looks really good. Would love see one in real life again.

Anyone know what the range of colours was at launch? I only ever seem to see very early XJ40s in red or white.

86-87 models only (maybe just into 88MY?) There’s quite a few unique parts on the very early cars. For some reason they did away with and gradually changed, just about everything!

Apparently still available new!
Maybe they built 200,000 of the parts. Expecting to fit them right until the end, then management changed their mind?
