Time to lift up that boot seal now then
Also check the seam join under the upright carpet at the back. I can show you some horrors of how that can turn out.
It’s worth blocking off the grommet holes on that flat surface (with some silicone sealer), to stop water entering there.
A few weeks ago I removed all carpeting and sound insulation from the trunk (except the foam insulation behind the fuel tank which was unreachable), washing/cleaning the carpeting and replacing the insulation. After scraping off rust.
The grommet holes you mentioned, under the small vertical rectangular carpet on the back inside wall of the trunk, were pretty corroded. To the extend that two of the four holes are now too big to fit the grommet back in again. I scraped off the rust but didn’t cover those holes with silicone as they were too wide. But I’ll take tour advice and revisit the area, something can definitely be done short of welding, as a temporary measure at least. Do you have pictures of that area during your restoration?
Btw I saw some post where I believe your XJR was on the cover of a magazine, it looked great! Do you have a PDF of that article?
