Spot on guys cheers. Yes the bracket was quite easy, Ive had to make a few odd ones up. The nut welded on to this bugs me, as it looks a bit half arsed, it will easy out last the original as it has a proper paint system on it and not this naff powder coat everything has.

Anyways, hopefully some pictures here the right way around of where the car is currently at. I've been finished a bit late this last few nights so as much as I'd like to crack on grinding and welding it's a lovely quite place we live and I try not to upset the neigbours :roll: , they did have a great reintroduction to the shed soundtrack this weekend mind.

Going to whip the last remaining edge out once I've made up the replacement bits and I'm confident they're going to fit in without needing more than a minimal amount of filler to get them flush.

I had the pleasure of the ride back from the jaguar museum in my father's superb X300 3.2 Sport. It really is the best one I've seen and while he is a heck of a guy for changing cars I have a feeling it's in his custody for a while yet. The experience really did remind of my own car (in comparison my wasn't that good!) and the smooth ride and minimal effort it needs to glide down the road. It certainly sets the bar high and only added to the enthusiasm to get mine as good as I can get it.

Good progress. It’s taking shape.
That sill end is not great, but I have seen worse. The left side on my xjr manual was much worse.
I hope you have seen that the front sill end caps are (amazingly) available new/ NOS. It’s one less piece to make up. ;)

Hi Walker,

just been reading up on your thread and i must say that you have done an amazing job so far, shame that i cannot see some of your images but that engine bay looks amazing. Its good to see another Jag being saved but i can relate to you removing the engine as its a big old lump but to repair the bulkhead i imagine this must be the easiest option.

I must say that the cross member and associated parts look so good and eventually i would really like to get to this standard.

Obviously family comes first and getting spare moments to do some spanner time can be restricted but have you set yourself a date target to get all the work done by :?:

Do you have a garage or is all this work being carried out on the drive :?:

I have not driven mine for six years until this week and i also had forgotten just how well a sorted 40 drives.

That is good news Naki, I'm still awaiting my veneers from JCP so could add to the order, do you know the part number off hand? Would save a bit of piecing together, I had tried to keep it as intact as possible but there wasn't much left to save in the first place!

I've just put the first tacks on a small patch on the heel board and one along the sill above the jacking point. There has been no chance to get much else done over the weekend, this time distractions were an impromptu evening's fishing and the horrors of looking for then buying and assembling a new dining table and chairs for herself :roll: .

Time wise, well, I suppose the only real deadline on this is the show at Dunkeld, 2021. As this does sound a long time away I must point out the forecast is likely babies by that point :shock: and a full respray :shock: so a few things to contend with. My long suffering (aye, I've not even started yet) other half is finally at peace with the car, so no chance of an advert in 12 months time saying change of situation, promise!

The aforementioned dictator, sorry, wife wouldn't left me build the garage I wanted, so settled for an 8m x 4m oak carport all enclosed in front of a 5m x 4m shed. In fairness it doesn't have the ring to it that playing in the garage has, but it really is a great set up. Luckily there is also enough overhead height to lift a complete engine and gearbox clear of a car! Next house/phase 2 here is certainly a 4 post lift, I'm just the wrong build for crawling about under cars!

Always great to hear somebody mulling over the idea of taking the plunge. If a car isn't in frontline use then this kind of work is achievable, you'd be pushed to change a bulkhead over a long weekend ready for monday haha. I can only recommend getting in about it and seeing just what's lurking.

I have had a fairly easy run of it with L3, I wouldn't want to work on one with much more rust, in saying that if the right car came up it wouldn't stop me if it was rotten, the recent weetabix xj12 being a prime candidate, but let's not talk about the next one until my big girl of sitting pretty again.

More of these need to be saved! There is no end of help on the forum, no chance of me getting this far without it, thanks guys!

Couldn't believe it myself Naki, I've got one welded into the car just now and I've bought 2 pairs for future adventures! Very helpful parts to have, cheers!

Officially finished welding, well as far as I am aware! Just managed to get cleaned up and primed before my wife came back from her trip away, so that was the end of that! Hopefully I can get bits done through the week as I think I will be working away for a couple of weeks after that. Typical. No pictures of the work as I went along typically but will get something sorted for you all to have a gander at.

We have a resident rodent disposal expert, 2 year old Millie. I thought when the highland rain sets in she disappears down to an old barn down from us and does, you know, cat stuff. Oh no, not our Millie, she's all that dont you know. She has worked out that the brake pedal housing opening is just the right size to sneak into a certain vehicle and watch the world go by! Times ticking Mills, bolting it shut soon!

Well this is certainly over due, you know the story well by now, work work and more work. Just to throw even more spanners into the works, we and in the middle of an impromptu house move. Typically this was announced to me just as the rear Subframe and suspension was freed from the car, disassembled and taken to work for blast cleaning. So the race is now on to get the car mobile again so it can be trailered the 15 miles to the new house. Sweet joy.

So this does mean a quick catch up is in order, hopefully the pictures will save a lot of my droning on, so here is how the front end now looks:

I've secured a new windscreen and that will be collected next weekend. There is a single concrete garage at the new house, I've yet to measure it, but it's certainly not much use for such a proportioned kitten. I've never much liked the concrete garages, and it will serve mainly as a store until summer when there will be something more suitable being put up, hopefully incorporating a car lift! So after 4 years of completely dry storage the car will be back under the fitted outdoor cover I have with the promise this is the last time, just glad I held off on the paint work!

Ok so back end was a doddle to remove apart from the N/S A frame bush that put up a good fight. Ultimately I used a very small 1 ton bottle jack on top of the frame with my trusty truck bed rubber block onto and slowly pushed the frame free.

I have a few bits to finish off at work before reassembly can start, but despite the rough looking parts they have cleaned up beautifully, and have received the miracle epoxy zinc phosphate primer, awaiting the fantastic black top coat.

I had been collecting the relevant parts to rebuild the diff. The given time has made this a bit of a impossible task however should be easy enough to sort in future. There is a very slight whine on the diff that took a long time to confirm, but it seems to hold on to its oil well enough for the time being. As usual the oil was in desperate need of changing, so this has been done and once run in will be changed again.

Rear shocks are already back together, I had bought a powerflex kit and had talked myself into using it, however it comparing the parts to the genuine jaguar parts I couldn't go though with it as I'm sure the rear end would have just felt too stiff. So, genuine jag bushes all round apart from the front which is a mix of jag and polybush.

I am having conflicted feelings about the exhaust, it is surely the original one, and certainly looks like it's been on the car 26 years. I was looking into one of the lovely TT extractor kits from AJ6 however the money required has been earmarked for a bathroom or something ridiculous like that. Again for the time being it can stay and when revisiting the diff it will be replaced.

Interior wise we now have a centre console and dash top back in, just because it's easier than moving them and them getting damaged. Its during a house move you realise just how much your parts collection has taken over the loft and half the shed, and the scrutiny starts from herself, do you really need this? Well of course is the standard answer!

How is the diff mounted to the front tie? Could you take some pics and post here? I have some play in there, diff is moving back and forwards a little bit with the car on the ground and its not moving on the rear bushes at it suppose to.

Also, have you sourced a monoframe instead of individual diff struts? :) Looks like would be a well worth upgrade and would make sense to fit it now you have it all out.

I had wanted to upgrade the rear suspension to the later x300 spec. My reason for not going though with it was the thought that in years to come we will have a lot of preserved vehicles that are all totally different from their original spec. My own car is different in many way to it's original spec, but having cleaned up the original components I feel like they are worth putting back into the car. I do like the idea of the rear brace and there is no question of if I get another 40 project, but when!

Good luck removing wishbone bolts, much easier to free them when they are still attached to the car but generally, try to turn the wishbones up and down first(with the diff and an extra person holding in on the ground) if they are stuck, once freed, they will come out with the rust wire brushed. No other way to remove them really :)
Naki, will have rear x300 wishbone setup if you ever decide on upgrading the rear end, it's definitely well worth it, even if like I said, just replacing diff struts with monobrace. Car is much more stable when cornering.
