Fuel pump just became loud.

Postby darrenwgaransi+ » Mon Aug 19, 2019 2:38 am

Hi Everyone,

I filled up the car yesterday and drove it a long distance today in the hot 92 degree weather. The fuel pump is now noisy. It is humming quite noticeably and I can feel the vibration on the rear parcel shelf. Should I accept that the pump is close to death, and if so, what brand should I replace it with? I'm going to try and use up this tank of gas, as I know I have an impending date with removing that darn tank.

Inside the plastic unit is a Walbro pump, still easily available.

I replaced the fuel filter about 2 years ago so I don't think that's the problem, but guess what? The noise is gone. The pump is quiet again. I purchased a bottle of marvel mystery oil and poured 8 ounces into the gas tank. I'm beginning to wonder if the detergent separated from the fuel since this happened after a fill up. We are going through an end of summer heatwave right now. I'm not sure if that has something to do with the problem.

I wonder if the batch of fuel was particularly dirty?
Did you run the tank dry/ low at all? That can suck in extra muck from the tank bottom.

I'm not really sure if the fuel was dirty or not. I do remember that this happened briefly about a year ago. I have always purchased fuel from the super convenience store near to my house, since they have the lowest prices. I did read recently that their fuel is not considered to be top tier. I've decided to go to a different gas station; I will keep everyone posted to see what happens. I will say that since I added marvel mystery oil to the tank and used up the fuel from the convenience store, the symptoms have not returned. I also realize that at 125k miles, this fuel pump will fail sooner or later. Has anyone had an experience where the fuel pump lasts beyond 125k miles?

I do not think there is a set lifespan for fuel pumps. Though clearly if fuel filters are changed on schedule, it reduces the work load for the pump.
It’s quite a big job to change a submerged fuel pump.

Mine went at about 130K, again, I attribute the failure to filling up at a station that sold budget priced gas and I think probably had old tanks with a high level of sediment.

Have you renewed the filter yet. It’s a cheap part. That’s the first thing I would do, as a matter of course. So many of these get forgotten about, as people tend to wait until there’s a problem, before changing a filter.

Hi Naki,

I did indeed change the filter about a year ago. It's been a few weeks now and I've bought fuel at BP instead of the local convenience store. The noise has not returned. I will be taking a long trip today so I will see what happens.

OK interesting. That is a nice easy fix for a change.
Might I suggest a second fuel filter change too as a precaution. If there was enough dirt in the fuel to cause the pump to get noisy, that may all be stuck in the filter now. For the low price of the filter, it may be worth it.
