INSIGNIA UPDATE

Postby xj12-rob » Sat Jan 23, 2010 5:30 pm

those of you who know me know I have a soft spot for the weird, wonderful and odd Jaguars

Insignia cars have always been one of my holy grails, I've had two so far, and I'm off to look at one tomorrow again

To recap, in 1992 when Jaguar closed the DS420 Limo shop, they had all the REAL craftsmen left standing idle, so they devised "Insignia", a bespoke service for your 40 or XJS, you could specify special paint, trim, wood wheels ets at HUGE cost, amd in any combination you wanted, prospective customers were taken to Brown's Lane to "spec" their cars, these are rare and odd machines, and full spec Insignias are indeed a rare beast, most have some but not all of the features, I do know of a 4.0 Sov, in Lavender, with Powder Blue leather, Thistle Blue carpets with Stone bindings, it sounds horrible, but it really appealed to me!!. A good proportion of Insignias were put onto the Jaguar demo fleet to do the round of the dealerships to show what could be done if you had the cash, one of mine was an ex Jaguar demo, the other a private buyer who I bought the car from

Unless someone would like to correct me, there are no production figures for these cars, and it has always be a given that about 200 40's were built, and a few more that that in XJS

Well. yesterday at JH, I was handed the complete Insignia production figures, I will now need to extract from that each vin number, and hence the spec of each one, Jaguar have only provided body number and market car was destined for, but it's a start

Outcome is only 57 Insignia XJS's were built, a HUGE surprise, I know about a dozen of these cars, on the XJ40 318 were produced, so way over the estimate of 200, so next job after Majestic will be an Insignia register

Here's a nice one. If only I hadn't started the resto...

If I am reading the list right, one of 4.

Contacted them for VIN and directed them here.

I'll send you the latest version of my sheet tomorrow. Might be the last chance I get for a while (not sure of whether there'll be internet where I'm going).

If that Insignia was at <100k miles, I would have canned the resto - stored it, and BIN'ed this one.

Looks like quite a reserved Insignia to me. Nothing too out of the ordinary (to my eyes at least :? )

Maybe not quite this radical though.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1993-JAGUAR-XJ-S- ... 35a928cd86 Fetched a decent price, nonetheless.

Is that true about Insignia's being galvanised?

Mineral green is an Insignia colour, but thst appears to be it with this car, however the owner has contacted me with regard to it being a Majestic, looking at the pics I think not, any one want to confirm that with me??

I'm waiting for a vin and body number to show up to nail the cars origins

Nope looks like a normal XJ12. Some useful pictures might bring out this strange colour!
