New XJ6 owner

Postby CraigXJ40 » Wed Jul 18, 2018 2:19 am

Hi all,

As some of you may know from earlier posts, my dad had an XJ40 (1991 XJ6) for a couple of years when I was growing up. Around 4 years ago now, I bought a 1992 Sovereign in the same colour (diamond blue) and with help from the forum, secretly began a rolling restoration programme as a surprise for his 65th birthday. We love it and mainly use it for day trips at weekends and special occasions. It's most recent outing was on Father's Day. I replaced the headlining a few weeks ago and it's just passed it's third MOT in our ownership.

Around 18 months ago, I was on my way to an appointment for work when I saw an XJ40 in a similar colour to ours, parked in a public car park opposite a row of shops. They're a pretty rare sight, particularly round here, so I stopped and left a note on the windscreen. A few weeks later, I got an email from the owner who at that time, worked in the newsagents across the road. I dropped in to see him one day - he's owned the car for almost twenty years! I explained our story and we agreed we'd try to get the two cars together which we did around this time last year (see picture).

A few weeks ago, the owner emailed me to let me know he was getting ready to retire and was planning to sell the car. The car needs some work and he was really keen for it to go to someone who appreciated XJ40's so he wondered if I'd like to buy it - so I did! It's a really nice, original example: 2.9 auto (595xxx), arctic blue, doeskin leather with just under 80k miles, sunroof (no rot) and lattice wheels. He was able to give me the owners handbook and RAC book, but unfortunately, he's misplaced the wallet and book pack. I have some spare bits and pieces of literature from trawling the scrap yards, but I think the correct handbook could be the green one with the growler on the front - perhaps someone could set me straight on that.

I really like this colouring on the 40, especially with a chrome grille, they look great, a proper classic car look.

The addiction's that great I've got to stop looking. If that makes sense :?:

I'm not keeping the car at home, so it'll be the weekend before I get a chance to give it a more thorough look over. Here are some more pictures taken at this time last year. The interior shots are taken from a video.

Naki's going to help with some bits missing from the toolkit. I've started to piece together a literature pack in case the original wallet and books can't be found.

Analogue Dash 2.9 too. Looks really tidy.
Ski slope and ash tray condition is quite telling.

Does it need any work then?

I watched a youtube video of the digi dash earlier today. Don't think I've seen one first hand though.

It doesn't seem to need anything out of the ordinary. I did notice the handbrake doesn't hold and the brakes are a little spongey. Mechanically it seems sound - it's been in daily use for the past two years.

Lattice wheels have been powdercoated, tyres are good. Some rust on the sill ends and arches, but they seem solid. Bootlid slam panel needs replaced. The leading edge of the bonnet has been repaired at some point and has started to crack - it looks okay for now and it's not too bad on the underside, but will need addressed if I'm going to try and avoid fitting a donor bonnet.I haven't checked under the scuttle, or the boot carpets yet. It came with a spare lattice and the original hubcaps and metric steelies with tyres.

It recently had some welding done on the exhaust. It has a cracked headlight, there's a side repeater out, dim/dip has failed on both headlights. it has a year's MOT, so there's no urgency. I think I have a spare headlamp units from when I did the quad conversion on the Sovereign and I had the slam panel on the Sovereign powdercoated before I came across a new one, so I can fit that.

It has the original Clarion stereo (no code), aerial works as it should. The headlining has dropped, but because it has the sunroof, it only really affects the rear seat passengers, other than the occasional sight of it flapping in the rear view mirror! Slight crack on the arm rest on the passengers door and the leather's damaged on the bolster of the driver's seat. Steering wheel seems slightly tacky to the touch - If I go for a myrtle wooden wheel on the Sovereign, I can swap them over. Original carpets and veneer are in good condition.

It only came with one key, the handbook and RAC book. The previous owner thinks he still has the service book and key somewhere in the house - so he's going to keep looking for it.

I'm going to start with a deep clean and give it a service just to get to know the car and make a list. There's still a few jobs left to be done on the Sovereign, so I want to do those first. I'm kinda tempted to convert the Sovereign back to the fishtanks now that we have an XJ6 with the quads....
