Starting beauty

Postby Romeo_3400 » Tue Nov 13, 2018 10:32 pm

Hello everybody,

This is my first post, I am a bit familiar with old Jags having owned many 40s, xjs and a manual x300 in the past and for almost 20 years I cherish a lovely SWB S2 Daimler converted to Aj6 power.
I've been following this great forum for a while and thought i could get your expert knowledge on a little problem I have with my Dad's 89' Sovereign 3.6.
Basically whilst trickle charging the battery the bonnet fell on the charger (!) and according to my Dad there's been some sparks flying and since then we haven't been able to start the car.
Now I don't think the started motor has a fuse but is there any obvious things to check other than ignition switch and relays under the glove box ? Or is there a way to check the starter motor ?
Not sure I am missing something, the car is not local to me so I am planning to have a go soon but need as much info as possible.
Here's a couple of pics for good measure...
Thanks Folks, looking forward to some good advice

Freddie

Welcome aboard.
Unusual issue you have there.
I think you need to check the wiring for any damage. The presence of sparks, means something is shorting out somewhere!

I believe new members need to post 10 post before they can post pictures. This is probably to prevent bandits from displaying too much skin or blood...

Ok cheers, won’t wait for 10 post though ! pics below.

We have checked relay and wiring to the best of our knowledge, i just wonder if there is a fuse somewhere that we missed ?

The car is in France and haven’t got access to my good old Haynes manual.

Anybody has diagram by any chance ?

Thanks Freddie

First things first, check the Battery voltage now ... It needs to be at least 12.2 volts and ideally closer to 12.6, to indicate a well charged Battery. Its possible the charger might have suffered more than the car ... :?:

we have replaced the battery with a new one, the old one was tired anyway but still no luck starting the engine. Starter relay looks ok but will swap it just in case.

I don't think there is any fuse to worry about ?

below photo before the disaster occurred ! :o

A classic trick is to apply 12V straight to the starter.
If that brings it back to life you can work your way back from there...
