Boot lid adjustment

Postby Welshy » Sat Feb 09, 2019 9:35 pm

The boot lid on my 3.2S sits proud where it meets the petrol filler flap. As such, it's not sealing fully when closed and is allowing water into the boot

I can't explain why this has happened as I don't ever remember it being like this. Has anyone adjusted the boot lid closure before?

Unless the hinge bolts to the bootlid have loosened it's hard to see how this gapping could occur. (Drastic wear of the hinge pin?)

Where the hinge bolts to the bodywork (under the rear window) can this shimmed?

There is certainly adjustable bolts on the bonnet, I can't remember off the top of my head if there are on the boot, but I'm sure a shim would help. Can't see the hinges wearing out enough to upset the seating, maybe loosening the bolts would reveal a level of adjustment, are the holes elongated I wonder?

Not sure how clear this is to interpret. This is the underside of a 93 build boot, but I'm sure they are the same across all years. The threaded insert is fixed in the boot panel but it looks as if the hinge has elongated holes going by the marks on the paint. I wonder if this is any use :)

Cheers for the replies

I can't understand how this has happened either, but it sits proud and is allowing water enter the boot. I'll take a look at it this weekend

if the boot lid is high , and you can confirm it hasn't been forced, then its fairly easy to rectify , you need to shim between the hinge and the car body ( to lower down the hinge ) this is easily accessed under the rear screen scuttle in the boot, you will see the two bolts holding the hinge to the body , undo and either slide in a shim , or remove the bolt and put a washer in between and put the bolt back in , this will have the effect of lowering the boot lid on whichever side you need to do

i doubt there are any shims on the boot lid side, and this will raise the lid even higher,,,

do you have a picture of the discrepancy ?

Hi all

My car went to bodyshop for a bit of work. Whilst there, I asked them to take a look and they sorted it for me :)
