Anyone changed out a radiator? HELP!!!

Postby abercanadian » Fri Jul 31, 2020 11:07 pm

Those transmission and steering fluid cooler line fittings - what tool fits those (apparently metric) press fittings on a late 40?

Have a spare rad but don’t want to start the job if I won’t be able to undo the fittings …any workarounds to release the fittings other than finding the correct tool?
Oh and if the correct tool, where do I get one?

help!

Do you mean these connections Larry?

This is on my 93 model. I'm pretty sure its a 19mm open ended spanner and hope they're not seized.

Thanks Chris - looks like mine are the same - not sure that my spare rad had the same fittings though.. . seems like some radiators fitted in 93 for sure had quick release fittings as you can see by this old rad removal description posted by DonB on jag-lovers old site (enlargements don't work but thumbs and descriptions are ok)

http://www.jag-lovers.org/snaps/snap_view.php3?id=1380056153

this is all very odd as my spare rad is from a late 94 and my car is just a bit earlier in 94 so until I can get to my spare rad (across town) to check ....

I sure hope I can use the spare rad otherwise it might be chewing gum/eggwhite and stop leak time :o
no - not really, but major hassle if different.

Larry

{edit:}
I just took a look at the spare rad and it looks like the fittings are the same as what I have, screw on just like Chris, not push-on at all, so all good - WHEW!
Weird that some years (late 92/early 93MY??) in the middle of production had push-on connectors ..DonB's definitely were and that was supposedly a 93MY. Curious. Anyone have an answer?

I just read an old necropost from 2011 regarding the different style fittings on the rads used on the 93MY cars - I see that the change back to non-quick-fit trans cooler rads occurred at VIN 687219.
These quick-fit rads were part number CCC5476, introduced at VIN 667829 and replaced at VIN 687219. All other cars, earlier and later, used rads with threaded trans cooler line attachments.

You got the it Larry. Nothing is ever simple.
93MY will not be a straight swap into a 94MY. Even if you swapped the complete oil cooler lines, I think those are different connections at the gearbox end too.

The slightly better news is that the same 94MY rad was used on all 6cyl x300. So it widens the net to search for another.
You may as well sell the 93 rad off and recoup some cash to pay for the other.

I think I made a mistake Naki - it was only in my imagination that the spare rad was 93 style - it was actually 94 style so it fits my car after all!

cheers
